Welcome Stallions!

The 5th grade teachers:  Mrs. Hambleton and Mrs. Marsters  Mrs. Henry and Mrs. Trevino  Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Kerr

Important people to know  Mrs. Schwinger – Principal  Mr. Granger– Assistant Principal  Mrs. Collins– School Counselor  Mrs. Dasher – School Nurse

School-wide theme of respect We want to ensure all of our students are working in a happy, healthy, and safe learning environment. Mrs. Collins will be expanding on this throughout the year with the students.

Arrival to school  The building opens at 7:30 – students report to the cafeteria  Students should be on time-we start class right at 8:10

Tardies and Absences  Students arriving after 8:10 are marked tardy  Absences- please send excuse the day student returns to school It is okay to the excuse You have five days to get the excuse turned in.  Students can make arrangements to make up an assignment due to an absence during study hall or before school.

Classwork  Attendance is important since learning takes place in the classroom.  Late work policy: -5 points per day for up to three days; after three days teacher will grade what the student was able to complete.  Math- needs to show all work  Reading/Science/SS- provide “text evidence" as to why an answer is correct or not. NA= no answer NP= no proving  Cheating policy: first offense -10 points; second offense results in a 0 and a thinksheet.

Homework  Our schoolnotes are updated weekly – please make sure your are signed up for notifications.  The planner will also be filled out each week.  Homework is important! Missing homework can effect their performance and will be reflected in their conduct grade on the report card.

Grading  Major grades: 3 per nine weeks for every subject students can retest if score is below a 75/ highest grade possible on a retest is also a 75  Minor grades: 9 per nine weeks for reading/language/math 6 per nine weeks for science/social no retesting for these grades  This means your student will take multiple tests in one week or one day.

Help!  How is my child helped in/during class? -Our tables are always open for students to ask questions- please encourage this - Teachers pull small groups to work on a specific skill several times throughout the week - Students self-check  red, yellow, green group and meet with me at the table if they need help  How can I help my child at home? - Schoolnotes.com: websites with extra practice. - Ask them about their day, go over homework, go over ISN to reinforce what they learned that day.

Rewards and Consequences  Students can earn “Gotcha Being Good” coupons or tickets – these can be turned in for rewards.  Homework reports and Thinksheets will help students reflect on their choices. These will need to be signed and returned the next day.

Snacks  Healthy, “non-messy” items that will allow for classroom instruction to continue.  Bring a water bottle to minimize leaving the classroom.

Dress Code  Students have grown since last year and will most likely hit a growth spurt this year – please check their clothes before they leave.  Follow FBISD / school handbook for student dress code.

Technology  Technology should be used for instructional purposes only and with a teacher’s permission.  Teachers are not responsible if their personal items are lost, stolen or broken.  Phones should be turned off during the day unless a teacher allows them to be used for instructional purposes. Phones picked up will be turned in to the office.  Technology in the class is FUN and a privilege- if it is abused then the privilege will be lost.

Dismissal  All students should have received a carpool number regardless of how they get home. Make sure your child knows their number incase of rainy day dismissal. Students cannot be checked out after 2:45.  Car Riders, please hang your numbers where they can be seen from a distance.  Number should be picked up at the front drive; should be picked up at the side drive.

Service Learning  Each student will need to complete 30 hours of volunteer hours by the first week of May  10 hours to be home and recorded by the parent/guardian to be turned in to homeroom teacher in May  20 hours to be school and recorded by the teacher  Volunteer hours – helping others without payment or award; if money is collected then donate it to a charity  Detailed info will be posted to homeroom teacher’s schoolnotes soon!

Important Dates  Colonial Day: 11/13 – Parent volunteers would need to complete a background check ahead of time.  STAAR dates: 3/29 (Math) 3/30 (Reading) 5/11 (Science)  Field Trip: /27 - Parent volunteers would need to complete a background check ahead of time.  Service Learning Award Ceremony: 6/2
