Welcome Statement We as a group, are delighted to share with you our math unit on number and operations. Or grade level focus for this math unit is first grade. Please save all questions for after the presentation.

Unit Introduction  Our overall unit is on number and operations for the first grade. This standard of number and operations is the most important because it is the foundation of mathematics. All mathematics skills taught throughout school are based on number principles.  Our unit consists of lessons and activities in which first grade students will gain fundamental understanding and proficiency with numbers, counting, and arithmetic.  Throughout the unit, there are a sequence of lessons and activities, which ties everything together under the umbrella of numbers and operations.

Unit Goals The overall goals of this unit, which falls under the NCTM math standards for K-2 are for students to:  Gain an understanding of numbers and how they are represented  Begin to build a foundation for understanding relationships among numbers  Gain an understanding of the meanings of operations and how they are related to one another as well as be able to compute fluency

Snap-Shot: Unit Timeline Week One:  Opening Activity  Counting  Number Sense  Grouping Week Two:  Comparison  Odd & Even Numbers  Great verses Less (>,<,=) Week Three:  Addition  Quantities  Properties: Odd & Even Numbers
