Automotive Power Trains By: Anthony John Manistre 4M-G
Objective To Describe the components of an automotive (Prius) power train Describe how the power train functions

Components of a Prius Power Train Internal Combustions Engine Motor/Generator Inverters Battery Power Split Device Silent Chain and Reduction Gears Differential Axels, and Wheels
Overview Motor/Generator –2 motors Rotor, and Shaft –Powered by electric current –Attached to gears which allows motor to turn wheels –Acts as a generator when brakes are applied Inverters –Controls speed of rotation and torque of motors –Uses electrical currents to do so Power Split Device –Distributes power and torque to the wheels
Overview Silent Chain and Reduction Gears –Allow the engine to spin faster than the wheels –Multiply the torque from the engine and apply it to the wheels Differential –Allows inside and outside wheels to turn at slightly different rates Axels –Pass torque from the differential to the wheel hubs and include a joint to allow the wheels to move up and down with the suspension
What’s Missing? Gearbox Clutch or Torque Converter Starter Motor Alternator
