English We follow the New National Curriculum which includes; Spoken Language Reading: Word Reading (Phonics) Reading: Comprehension Writing: Transcription (Spelling) Writing: Handwriting & Presentation Writing: Composition Writing: Vocabulary, Grammar & Punctuation

Phonics Over this year the children will be revising Phase 5 and completing Phase 6 of a synthetic phonics scheme. We have a 20 minute phonics lesson every morning. Activities include word hunts, interactive games, word building and sentence work.

Phase 6

Spelling The children will learn new ways to spell phonemes, apply spelling rules, use apostrophes, distinguish between homophones and add suffixes. Every Friday the children will bring home new spellings to learn based on what has been taught that week. They will be tested the following Friday and should return their Spelling books then. The words will be tested as a list and within dictated sentences for the children to write correctly, including punctuation.

Handwriting The children practice joined handwriting every morning and are encouraged to use this throughout all of their writing They should continue to ‘lead’ in every letter from the writing line.

Reading: We strive to hear the children read as much as possible through a variety of activities. This can be done through; Reading questions or extracts and texts in literacy Guided reading Individual reading Written and spoken comprehension activities We cannot emphasise enough the importance of you listening to your child read as much as possible.

Writing Composition: We will be covering; Writing about real events Stories with familiar settings Fairy stories and traditional tales Poetry Non-Fiction writing, structured in different ways Writing for different purposes e.g. instructions The children will be taught to make simple additions, revisions and corrections by proof reading their work.

Vocabulary, Grammar & Punctuation Learn how to use punctuation marks correctly including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes Identifying a sentence as a statement, question, command or exclamation Identifying and using nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs Subordination (using when, if, that, because) and co- ordination (using or, and, but) Present and past tense (she is shouting/she was shouting

Learning outcomes for the end of Year 2 Geometry Identify and describe 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and symmetry Identify and describe 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement in terms of half/quarter/three quarter/whole, clockwise, anti-clockwise and right angle. Statistics Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, bock graphs and simple tables Ask and answer simple questions and totalling and comparing data

Science: This year we will be covering the following topics: Animals including humans- Basic needs for survival, animals and their babies, exercise, hygiene and healthy eating Working Scientifically- Performing simple tests, making observations, recording information Uses of everyday materials- Identifying and comparing everyday materials, changing the shape of materials Plants- Growing seeds and bulbs, conditions for growth Living things and their habitats – Comparing living/non-living things, identify and name a variety of plants and animals, comparing habitats

Computing: This year we will be covering the following topics: Word processing and animation Graphics and artwork Programing using Probots, 2Control and Music software Digital imagery using Foto Flexer E-safety and ing Coding and debugging

History: Over this academic year we will be covering the following topics: Remembrance Day and Bonfire Night Florence Nightingale Paralympics – Stoke Mandeville

Geography: Locational knowledge - |world, U.K. and local Place knowledge – Isle of Coll Comparing the U.K. to Australia

Art and D&T This year the following topics will be covered: Creating our own lighthouses with moving mechanisms. Art skills – colour mixing, observational drawing Puppets Constructing islands Australian Art Planning a party – D & T food

Homework: There will be homework set every week and this alternates between Literacy and Numeracy. The homework is handed out on a Wednesday and is due in the following Monday. Spellings will also be given out every Friday for a test on Friday. The spellings are based upon key words or the phonics the children will be learning in that week.

How can you help your child at home? English: By reading a variety of texts and discussing them, pointing out the key features. Practising reading and the spelling of high frequency words regularly. Playing verbal games with words, creating stories, creating characters and orally describing items.

How can you help your child at home? continued Maths: By making sure the children are confident of their number bonds to 10 and 20. Working with them to improve their accuracy in adding one and 2 digit numbers together in their heads and on a number line. Understanding about numbers being greater than or less than other numbers. Counting accurately and being confident with numbers up to 100.

SATs In the summer term 2016, children in Year 2 will sit new SATs papers. SATs have been overhauled to reflect the changes to the National Curriculum. The children will take SATs in: - Reading - English grammar, punctuation and spelling - Maths

School trips This term we are walking down to the memorial in Chalfont St Peter and going to the pantomime. Next term we will be organising a visit related to our topic on Florence Nightingale. The Shortenills trip is in the Summer term. More details about the trip will be given closer to the time.

Swimming: Swimming is already taking place for Beech Class this term and half of the following term. Swimming will take place for Chestnut Class in the second half of term 2 and all of term 3. The children will be taught by both teachers and by qualified staff at the Chalfont Leisure centre.
