Themes  Racism  Survival  Trust  Friendship  Life vs. Death  Depression  Blindness  Wisdom  Adventures  War

Phillip He Doesn’t want to leave the island. Moved when he was 7 years old and now he is 11. He is adventurous, stupid, and curious. A racist He is a kid’s kid because he loves to play.

Timothy Extremely old. Black. Seemed powerful. Very muscular. “Neck was the size of a small tree trunk” Skin was alligator and cracked. Skin was as tough from age and walking barefoot on the hot decks of schooners and freighters. Stranded on a raft with Phillip, Page 32.

Grace Enright ◊Phillip’s mom. ◊Wants to move to Virginia to be safe from the war. ◊She is afraid of flying ◊Wants Phillip to be safe. ◊Doesn’t want to give away to much control. ◊She is also very emotional.

 Phillip Enright Sr.  Works at an oil refinery.  An expert at aviation gas and production of it.  Wants to stay on the island.  Not protective and is a workaholic.  Henrik Van Oven  Phillips best friend.  11.  Round face, chubby, straw colored hair, and his cheeks were always red.  Very serious.  Henrik’s Mom  Boys will be boys.  Laid back mom.  Lazier but not lazy.

Timothy’s Survival Techniques.  “We must be wis `bout what we `ave”, Page 36  “If luck d`flyin` feesh will flop on d`raft”, Page 38  “Don’t look at D`sun, tis powerful”, Page 33  Timothy made a shelter out of clothes on the raft, Page 34  Timothy only gave Phillip a little water so he could save it for every one, Page 36

Phillip’s Prejudice “My father told me to address as mister but he didn’t look like a mister to me besides he was black.” Page 35 “I saw the huge negro sitting on the raft near me.” Page 31 “He was black and ugly.” Page 33 “I’ve seen those before.” Page 32 “I new he was West Indian from the look of his skin.” Page 32

Phillip’s Rudeness “Your saving all the water for yourself,” Page 38 par.1 Blames Timothy for being on the raft. Page 48 par.1 He thinks its all his mothers fault for being there. Page 49 “A schooner will find us.” Page 37

Friendship I picked friendship because Timothy and Phillip both have their differences and similarities but they help each other and they are kind of like pals now. Before Phillip always thought of him as a big black old man who wasn’t good for any thing because his mom taught him to be like that. He learned that they had their place and they had theirs which isn't the right thing Phillip should have been learning. While Phillip was with Timothy he learned that maybe its alright to like blacks and that they’re not so much different then any one else. So he tried to become friends with him and it changed him and now he thought different about what his mom had taught him.

In chapter 10 he wants to be Timothy’s friend. He learns that he is just trying to help him and he wants to stay close to him and also because he is blind so he needs him. He has stayed very close to Timothy through this whole book and that’s one of the reasons why they are such good friends. A fight or any thing like that could break them up because they had to deal with each other for so long so they really had to get along or else Phillip wouldn’t have been where he was at, at the end of the chapter. Phillip in chapters 4-9, he was really prejudice against Timothy and he didn’t even want to be by him in the raft but Timothy still took care of him because he was much more mature than Phillip was. Timothy was really mature and he passed that down to Phillip when they were starting to be friends so Phillip was very mature and like an adult at the end of this book. He paid attention to Timothy and that’s one reason they were like family. He also learned that you should never judge a person by its cover with out learning about that person first.

Phillip  He is very adventurous and is prejudice in the beginning of this book. On page 31 he said to him self that he saw the big negro sitting beside him but now he has learned that its not the skin who describes a person, its inside that really counts. Phillip now likes Timothy a lot. When Timothy got malaria and Phillip had to learn a lot of things to take care of him on page 93 and all through the chapter. He was really worried that he might die and he didn’t want that to happen to his friend. When Timothy was teaching Phillip survival techniques they really bonded and that brought them even closer together. They weren’t just friends by the time Timothy died, they were like family and that made him think twice about being prejudice to black people.  He is at dealing with being blind and he is learning every thing all over again. He is learning how to fish and climb thing lie trees to get coca nuts on pages Timothy has to teach him all this because Timothy is sick so he isn’t going to be able to do this for him all the time. Timothy still takes care of him just not as much any more. Phillip learns how to do every thing fast so he has been doing most of the work when Timothy is trying to heal from his malaria and the big hurricane and it made him really mature and act like an adult.  At the end of this book Phillip gets rescued and sent back to his home and family and tells them all about Timothy and his adventures on the cay. His mom thought he was a little weird for liking a black person but he didn’t care he wasn’t prejudice any more. He didn’t like hanging out with his best friend Henrik. He didn’t like playing the childish games Henrik loved to play. Instead he talked to the black people that work on the ships and on the ports. Some said they knew Timothy and was sad he was gone. Through this whole book both Timothy and Phillip have gone through a lot and Phillip has learned a valuable lesson he will never forget.

Epilogue When I went back to the cay I remembered my memories and the first thing I wanted to do was see Timothy. I remembered the island only from description not from seeing it and when I saw it I could remember every thing Timothy had told me about. I saw our hut that had fallen and broke in two and the vine that I used to pull my self to the emergency fire. The coral reefs were even more beautiful then I imagined. All our stuff was still there like our fishing poles, water, and even the rope we used to tie ourselves to the tree. It was all there and it took my breath away when I got to actually see it with my own eyes. The cay did change though. No one has been there to keep our stuff together so it was all over the place and our hut was destroyed. The only thing that hasn’t changed was Timothy’s grave which I put a lot of effort in to it so it wouldn’t change for a long time and that really made me smile. The minute I got to the cay I cried and when I went by Timothy I prayed for 15 minutes. I never felt so happy in my life. The only thing that could of made me happier was to see Timothy crying with me right by my side. The cay changed my life so much that I will never go back to my old self again. It has made me change my ways about judging people and I know I will never judge a person with out knowing him or her first and I owe it all to Timothy for teaching me to be the right person. I love you Timothy and I wish you were here to share this moment with me.
