Sweeney Todd Demon Barber of Fleet Street Connor Bean

The Book Author: Hugh Wheeler Author Web Page Music and Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim Stephen Sondheim Web Page

The Book (cont’d 1) The book Sweeney Todd is actually the musical so it is in the format of people speaking to each other. If you have never seen the movie it is hard to understand everything and how it is in context.

The Book (cont’d 2) The reason the book is so hard to understand (if you haven’t seen the movie) is because it is a musical and it helps to know the melody of the tune used so you can get an idea of how fast it goes and how it rhymes. If I hadn’t seen the movie before the book I probably would’ve been lost trying to figure out how the songs were supposed to go.

The Book (cont’d 3) The reasons I like the book is because it has more dialogue and a few more songs in which can help you understand the movie more. The movie can give you a general outline of what goes on but some dialogue is lost that is in the book, therefore the books dialogue helps to tie the movie together.

The Movie Director: Tim Burton Writers: -John Logan (Screenplay) -Stephen Sondheim (Musical) -Christopher Bond (Musical Adaptation)

Main Characters In the Movie Sweeny Todd: Johnny Depp Mrs. Lovett: Helena Bonham Carter Judge Turpin: Alan Rickman The Beadle: Timothy Spall Pirelli: Sacha Baren Cohen Anthony: Jamie Campbell Bower Tobias (Toby): Edward Sanders

The Movie (cont’d) The movie Sweeney Todd is very similar to the book. The main thing I found good about the movie was that it helped to hear the melody of the music in it. It helps you understand the book a little bit more. The other thing that movie can show that the book nor the musical can is the gore and how much joy Sweeney gets from having his victims below him slicing their throats.

Movie (2) This shows how much he wants revenge on the judge and that is nothing the book can show. The movie also shows how sick and disgusting the basement of Mrs. Lovett’s shop (where they make the pies). It just adds to the detail and how gruesome it really is.
