Lesson Goals 1) Recognize that authors both use and deviate from genre norms to achieve specific effects 2) Draw appropriate conclusions about research topics 3) Develop context for the films to be analyzed 4) Identify common themes

EA1 Reminder  If you use camera movement, include that in the camera angle box.  If you were absent during the last lesson and did not receive an EA1 packet, stop by the room and pick one up.  The packet is also on the website if you lose your copy, but remember, it’s 26 pages total—13 if you print front & back

Open to page 146 Subject & Theme  Theme and Subject are NOT the same thing  Theme is the idea the author wishes to convey about the subject  Subject can be expressed in a word or two, like courage, survival, war  A theme is a general message or lesson about life; the will the survive, the courage to succeed in life

Page 147: Tim Burton  We will return to page 146 after reading the article on Page 147  While reading the article, highlight different subjects that appear in Burton’s films that reflect his beliefs or experiences Make notes in the margins about these subjects; why would Burton include them in his films?

Class List of Subjects  Write one of the subjects on the board that you found in the article  How can we transform these subjects in a theme statement?  Remember, theme is implied, not stated  Make a REASONABLE guess about what Burton believes  Example: Subject– being an outsider Theme – Being an outsider often allows one to have a unique and important perspective.

Research Activity: p151  Working with your home groups, you will research a topic related to Tim Burton  You may not use Wikipedia. It is not a credible source. It is a starting point.  You need at least 3 sources  You will teach your classmates about your topic  Use the graphic organizer to organize your research.

Topics Related to Tim Burton  Johnny Depp  Vincent Price  Edgar Allan Poe  Gothic Literature  While groups are presenting, take notes in the boxes on page 152

Homework  Bottom of page 152, writing prompt  Summarize the influence of these individuals and genres on the contemporary works of Tim Burton  AKA, how did these subjects and people influence Tim Burton in his film making based off of your classmates research?  2 paragraphs, 10 points  Remember to be working on EA1 !!!
