Use the next 5 minutes of class time to review your Unit 5.1 and 5.2 SFI terms. Don’t forget that there are resources on the class wiki to assist you with this. You will be accountable for these terms on today’s pass/fail quiz.

 How did Texas become an independent country?  What delayed the admission of Texas into the United States?  Why did the Mexican-American War occur?  What was the significance of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo?  Why did the U.S. pay so much for the Gadsden Purchase?

1. Silently read the provided article to yourself. As you read, circle any key (or unfamiliar) terms. 2. Next, go through your article a second time and highlight any arguments made by the author in the article. 3. Finally, be prepared to discuss the main ideas of the article with the class.

 During the discussion, direct your responses back to the text.  While you don’t have to agree with other’s statements, this is not a debate, but rather a discussion. Try to build on their points.  Whenever possible, connect your ideas back to what you have learned outside of this text.  Everyone not selected for the inner circle is responsible for Active Listening notes.

 Based on what you read, what do you think “drove” Jane McManus?  Given her gender in a time of inequality, what would you consider Jane’s most exceptional accomplishment?  What does the article reveal about the goals of the Young Americans?  Jane McManus was, to say the least, an enigma. What contradictions could be seen in her beliefs?  What does the article reveal about the complexities of supporting a Manifest Destiny agenda?
