Arthropoda By shaquille lay and laurence brown

General Characteristics Arthropoda have a exoskeleton, which is made up of three layers The outer layer is a mixture of protein and lipid. The middle layer is composed of protein and chitin. The inner layer also contain protein and chitin. The exoskeleton provide protection and support. Arthropoda means jointed foot.

Adaptations Pincer A crab has pincers for defending itself and its like its hands for picking up things.

Interesting Facts Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical segmented animals with a characteristic tough chitinous protective exoskeleton flexible only at the joints.chitinous exoskeleton The adaptive capabilities of the arthropods have enabled them to occupy virtually every niche and habitat of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Many species of arthropods, most important the insects, carry diseases that infect mankind and cause millions of deaths annually.

Vocabulary Appendages: legs and antenna. Compound eyes: eyes composed of many individual light detectors, each with its own lens. Molting: shedding its exoskeleton.

Devil Crayfish A freshwater crustaceans that has been well studied because of its relatively large size and abundance. Habitat: Lakes and rivers Size: About 2 to 6 inches long (5 to15 cm) Food Source: plants, as well as snails, tadpoles, and fish. Red Knee Tarantula Spiders Have eight simple eyes, and chelicerae modified as fangs. Habitat: fields, woods, swamps, caves, and deserts. Size: some can be the size of a hand.(10 inches) Food Source: small insects. Kingdom Animalia Phylum Arthropoda Class Arachnida Order Araneae Suborder Opisthothelae Family Theraphosidae Species Brachypelma smithi.Animalia ArthropodaArachnidaAraneae Opisthothelae Theraphosidae

Scolopendra gigantea Centipedes may have a few as 15 or as many as 175 pairs of legs. Habitat: Tropical regions. Size: 30 cm (12 in.) Food Source: earthworms and other insects.
