What is Common Core Math II? In Common Core Math II, you will engage in realistic problem-solving classroom activities. Daily activities include working collaboratively in small groups, hands-on investigations, discovery learning, and student presentations. As a result, you will have a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas and be able to communicate that knowledge fluently.

Class Expectations RESPECT yourself, others, and your school at all times. Take responsibility for your learning and your actions. Be physically and mentally prepared for class Consume food and beverages in the cafeteria only Comply with all KHS and Wake County policies. *You are responsible for your own actions. If you disrespect or infringe on a classmate’s right to learn, you will be asked to leave the classroom.*

Supplies 3-ring binder notebook paper pencils graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 recommended)

Tests Given at the end of each unit/chapter. If you are absent on test day, it is your responsibility to make up the test within ONE WEEK.

Retesting Retesting: If you fail a test, you are required to attend tutoring before retaking the test for a maximum grade of 80%. In order to qualify for a retest, YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED ALL THE HOMEWORK FOR THE UNIT. You must retake the test before the end of the next unit.

Quizzes Quizzes will be given periodically throughout each unit and may or may not be announced. If you miss a quiz, you retake it during class the day of your return.

Homework Assigned daily and checked for effort and completeness. ALL PROBLEMS MUST BE ATTEMPTED AND WORK MUST BE SHOWN. All homework will be recorded on a stamp sheet. Students must keep up with their stamp sheet!

Bathroom Passes Go before or after class. If you have an emergency, you must go at a time that I am not teaching. You also cannot go during the first or last 15 minutes of class. You must have your bathroom pass.

Make-Up Work When you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to copy the notes, complete the homework assignment(s), and take any tests that you missed. All worksheets and handouts will be posted online daily. You must copy notes from a classmate or from my website. If you miss a test, you must sign up with me to take it after school. Unless you ask me for your make-up work, I will assume you got it from my website. Homework that was due the day you were absent will be due the day you return. It is your responsibility to turn in this assignment during homework checks.

Phones Don’t text in my class. It’s annoying. It’s disrespectful. You’ll miss something important. If there is a special circumstance, tell me and we can work it out.

Here’s your one chance—take out your phone! to (919) You’ll get important reminders from me. I can’t see your number. You can’t reply to me. Standard messaging rates apply.

How do you get your grade? Quarter Grade 10% Homework 15% Classwork 25% Quizzes 50% Tests Semester Grade 40% First Quarter 40% Second Quarter 20% Final Exam

Take out a piece of paper. Write down two questions that you have about me. Write down one question that you have about this course.

In your groups, choose one question from each category!

Matching Game Each of you has been handed a card with a figure plotted on a coordinate plane. Find the classmate who has the “matching” figure. Once you find your “match”, sit together and write a quick description of how your figures have been changed. Be as descriptive as possible! Write your response on the top left corner of the paper on your desk. Once all matches have been found, you and your partner will describe your cards to the class. End

Transformations Definition: A transformation is a change in the position, size, or shape of a geometric figure.

Think About The Situation Original A BC

Investigation In this lesson, you will learn how coordinates can be used to transform shapes. You will investigate coordinate representation of rigid transformations that provide a way to reposition figures in a plane without changing the shape or the size of the figures.

Translation Definition: A translation (slide) is a transformation that moves points the same distance and in the same direction. A translation in the coordinate plane is described by a vector.

Preimage and Image The preimage is the original figure. – Denoted as A The image is the figure after a transformation. – Denoted as A’ or “A prime” (This is called Prime Notation)

Group Work A translation, or sliding motion, is determined by distance and direction. By looking carefully at a simple shape and its translated image, you can discover patterns relating the coordinates of the shape and the coordinates of its image. Time Keeper: 15 minutes Resource Manager: Translations Worksheet (1/member)

General Rule Compare the transformation rules you developed for Part d of Problem 1 and for Parts c and e of Problem 2. As a group, write a general rule that tells how to take any point (x, y) and find its translated image if the preimage is moved horizontally h units and vertically k units. Compare your rule with other groups and resolve any differences.

General Rule (x, y)  (x + h, y + k) Describes a translation of h horizontal units (+ Right, - Left) k vertical units (+ Up, - Down)

Example Write a description and rule for the following translation

Vector Notation Vector notation is another way to write rules of translations. A vector is written as – h = left/right – k = up/down

Assessment QuickWrite: On a post-it note, summarize what you learned today in 2 minutes. You may include pictures or symbols if needed. Post on board when finished.
