Overview Who are the members elected to School Site Council (SSC)? How many members are elected to the SSC? -Elementary -Secondary What are the roles and responsibilities of the SSC? What is the voting process for elections and for SSC agenda items?

Who are the “members” elected to the SSC? -Classroom Teachers: Provide daily instruction to students assigned to their class -Other School Staff: Resource teachers, school psychologists, counselors, nurses, instructional aides, clerks, custodians -Parents: A mother, father or guardian of a child -Community Members: A person who is not employed by the school district, nor the parent or guardian of a pupil attending the participating school. Community members seeking seats on the SSC are listed on the same ballot as parents -Students (Secondary only): Student members must be elected to their seats on SSC. Remember-SSC members hold the office for 2 years

How many members are elected to the SSC at the Elementary level? A 10 member SSC satisfies the elementary requirement. The elementary SSC must have equal parity between: (a) school staff members (the principal, classroom teachers, and other school staff whereas classroom teachers comprise the majority of this half of the council) AND (b) parent/community members The other half of the SSC members must be parents/community members

10 member SSC Elementary There must be an equal number of members between school staff and parent/community members.

HOWEVER…….. A 10 member elementary SSC satisfies the requirement. However…… A school site may choose to have a larger council BUT there must be an equal # of members between school staff members and parent/community members.

Other Elementary School SSC Options Council Size ParentsPrincipalOther Staff Classroom Teachers

How many members are elected to SSC at the secondary level? A 12 member council fulfills the requirement for a secondary council. The secondary SSC must have equal parity between: (a) school staff members (principal, classroom teachers, and other school staff) NOTE: classroom teachers must comprise the majority of this half of the council AND (b) parent/community members and students The other half of the council must be parents/community members and students. NOTE: There must be an equal number of parents/community members and students for a secondary SSC.

12 member SSC Secondary There must be an equal number of members between school staff and parent/community members/students.

HOWEVER…….. A 12 member secondary SSC satisfies the requirement. However…… A school site may choose to have a larger council as long as there is an equal number of members between school staff members and parent/community/student members.

Other Secondary School SSC Options All secondary SSCs MUST have an equal # of parents and students. *Currently, all secondary sites have 16 member SSCs with this breakdown of members. Council Size ParentsStudentsPrincipalOther Staff Classroom Teachers 16*

Can seats on the SSC be reserved for members representing special school committees or interests (PTA, ELAC, CEDAC, etc.)? No! Seats may not be reserved on SSC. Members must be elected to the council.

Can SSC members serve as ELAC, DELAC or CEDAC reps? Yes! As long as they were nominated and elected into the position by the parents of the student body.

Can parent members of SSC be employed at that school? NO! The parent cannot serve as a “parent member” if (s)he is employed at the site; however, (s)he may be elected as a “staff member” on SSC.

Can student body officers at the secondary school automatically serve as student members of SSC? No! The student members must be elected to their seat on SSC. However, one strategy a school might use is to make SSC membership one of the required duties of student body officers BUT the term of office for SSC is two years and typically student body elections take place every year!

Who coordinates the elections for SSC? The principal or his /her designee coordinates SSC elections with the assistance of the RUSD Program Quality department.

When should SSC elections take place? What is the term of office? All SSC elections should have been completed by now for the school year. The term of office for all positions is two years.

SSC Election Process Nominations: -A person may nominate his or her self or another person for the appropriate SSC category. -Each person must accept the nomination Voting: -Voting for SSC occurs within each category. Teachers vote for teachers, other school staff vote for other school staff, parents vote for parents/community members, students vote for students, etc. Term of Office: -Each SCC membership is a 2-Year term of office.

What are the roles/responsibilities of the SSC? #1 Responsibility: Active involvement in the development and monitoring of the School Plan (Single Plan for Student Achievement) Review student achievement data on a routine basis Assist in the development of student achievement goals and strategies for improvement Assist in the development of all categorical budgets Approve the annual Single Plan for Student Achievement including Categorical Budgets with staffing expenditures (approve the position…not the person)

Voting for Approval of Action Items A “quorum” must be established in order to approve any action items (this includes approving monthly minutes). A “quorum” is a majority of your School Staff members AND a majority of your Parent/Community/Student members.

Does SSC have Bylaws? Yes! Bylaws should be regularly consulted in the conduct of SSC business. Bylaws must be in accord with RUSD policies and state law. Bylaws should be reviewed yearly and revised whenever a need is identified.

SMART Goal Evaluations The SMART Goal evaluation is the link from the Single Plan for Student Achievement to the Single Plan for Student Achievement This is different than the SMART Goal Verifications in years past Due to FPM that RUSD experienced this last April, just resolved on Friday, September 19 th Will begin with guiding questions These are determined by the district, and will be prepopulated Are rhetorical, and are answered by the evaluation process

Guiding Questions

SMART Goal Verification

SMART Goal Evaluation This year adds an evaluation component For each item in the action plan, you must: Tie it to one or more SMART Goals Evaluate “What worked” Evaluate “What didn’t work” Determine “What modifications will we make to the plan”

SMART Goal Evaluation

Conclusion Will end with a one or two page summary of the modifications to overall program at your site based upon the individual action plan evaluation

Other Considerations This should be done jointly with the School Site Council Not, the AP writes it and the SSC rubber stamps it Document the process in your SSC minutes Many plans currently have a significant number of action steps on their plans Considering focusing your action plans in the SPSA This will help narrow down the number of initiatives your are monitoring This will help with the eventual evaluation in 15-16
