History Sputnik 1 was the first orbiting satellite. Sputnik 1 started the space race. It was launched on October It took 98 minutes to orbit earth. It was launched by the Soviet Union.

Sputnik 1 Facts Sputnik 1 was 23 inches wide. The mission was 3 months long. It was fueled by Liquid Rocket Fuel.

Design Process The first part of the design process is “Identify the Problem” this was used because they needed to get to the moon some how. The second step is brainstorm. They people “brainstormed” because they had to decide how to make the spacecraft fly far enough to get into space and make it fly into orbit. The third step is “Design”. The spacecraft was involved in design because Sergei Korolev had to figure out how to design the spacecraft itself and how to make fuel that will get it into space. Sergei Korolev “built and evaluate, redesign” the spacecraft. Then they tested it and it worked but they then made Sputnik 2. Which was the redesigned form. They “shared” it by putting it in the news paper and all the people watching the news and things.
