What are the library policies? Sign out period: 2 weeks Renew books when needed Check out up to 3 books at a time Use computers for school research/projects (not , chat, personal use) Pay for lost or damaged books

How do passes work for flex in the media center? Subject area teacher and flex teacher sign the pass Bring all materials (including passport)and plan to stay unless there is a return time on pass Sign in and sign out

When can I use the media center if I’m not with a class? Before school (7:45 – 8:00) During flex, with a special pass After school, Monday through Thursday until 3:00 p.m.; Fridays until 2:30 p.m. Beginning in October: Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 3:30 p.m.

Once I find the book I want to look for in the catalog, how do I know where to find it on the shelf?

What’s the call number? 796 = Sports = baseball Nichols = author’s last name The call number tells you where you can find the book in the library—which section (non fiction) and which shelf.

Who was this man with too much time on his hands? Melville Dewey Dewey Decimal System for Non Fiction Books Each number is a subject Used in libraries all over the world 92 DEW

Can you “speak Dewey”? What do the decimals mean? = In line skating = Skateboarding = Basketball = Football = Soccer = Tennis = Baseball = Martial Arts TO PONDER… Why do you think In line skating, Skateboarding, and Martial Arts don’t have a 300 number after the decimal? How are they different from the other sports listed? What was the logic there?

Pay attention to the book’s call number in the online catalog… REF = Reference 030= Dewey Decimal Number for General information NEW = New Book of Knowledge (shelved by title if no author) The book is in the Reference Section on the shelf with the books numbered 030 under New

How do I find a book on the shelf? How can I find materials in the library media center catalog? Open Internet Explorer from the Applications Menu and click on the hot link for Destiny

Keyword search skateboarding If you have a very general topic, like skateboarding, it will look through all the records in the catalog for anywhere that word appears and give you a list of books related to skateboarding. The word is highlighted below.

Title search When you enter a word or term and click Title, you get a list of items with that word anywhere in the title. (Ex. Golden Compass) Click on the Title button after entering the title

Author search If you know the author of a book, and want to find others written by the same one, enter all or part of the name and click Author. (Ex: Flake, Sharon or just Flake)

Subject search If you want to find items about a certain subject, topic, person, or place, enter all or part of it and click Subject (Tip: Make sure to use the plural form, if your search term has one, instead of the singular).

Series search If you enjoyed a book that belongs to a series, like A Series of Unfortunate Events, and want to find books in the same series, enter all or part of the series name, and click Series.

How can I create a Personal Reading List? Want to save your list? Go to: File and Save as…text file to keep a copy in your personal folder.

What are some tips for searching? You can use uppercase or lowercase letters (golden Compass) You can use wildcards (skateboard*) You could use a question mark (?) to replace a single letter in the middle of a word if you are unsure of spelling (croc?dile) If you want to find a certain phrase in that exact order, put quotation marks (“Money Hungry”) around it to improve your search.
