Nixon’s Silent Majority Nixon sought to serve “the non-shouters, the non- demonstrators” with his presidency. The silent majority consisted of people that “worked in America’s factories, ran businesses, served in the government, provide most of the soldiers, and give life to the American dream”

During his Presidency Government’s role expands: Occupational Safety and Health Administration Drug Enforcement Agency Environmental Protection Agency Struggling economy Stagflation = recession plus inflation

Watergate June 1972 Break-in of Watergate Hotel (Democratic Headquarters) The burglars had connections to government officials One had the phone number of a prominent official in the Whitehouse Nixon denies break-in Bob Woodward, and Carl Bernstein – Washington Post July 1973 Investigation leads to requests for recorded conversations in the Whitehouse. Nixon refuses to release tapes from Whitehouse citing “executive privilege”. Supreme Court rules unanimously that Nixon must surrender all of the recordings. August 1974 Transcripts from tapes show that Nixon was involved in the cover-up of the Watergate break in. August 9 th 1974 Nixon resigns as President.
