Lesson Study—Part 2 August 4, 2011 Rich Hedman Center for Mathematics and Science Education California State University, Sacramento

1.Lesson Plans 2.Lesson Plan Analysis & Discussion 3.Where Are We Now? 4.Lesson Study During the School Year 5.Two (Planning) Tasks 6.Keeping Organized with Google Docs Agenda

Lesson Plans During lesson study, you will need to document the lesson(s) you will be teaching, so your lessons can be revised and shared with others. Question: What elements need to be included in lesson plans in order to share them with other teachers? Please discuss this question in your groups, and compile a list on poster paper of the elements which you think should be included in “sharable” lesson plans.

Lesson Plan Analysis I have made copies of 3 different sets of lesson plans made by different lesson study teams. Each group will get a lesson plan to analyze, then after about 15 minutes we will rotate the lesson plans to a different group, and you will get a new lesson plan to analyze.

Lesson Plan Analysis: 5 minutes: Quietly read through the lesson plan. Pay close attention to the lesson plan elements & format minutes: Discuss the lesson plan as a group. Make sure each part of the lesson plan makes sense to everyone. Answer the following questions. Questions: 1.What lesson set are you reviewing? (1, 2, or 3) 2.What did you like about the structure or elements of the lesson plans? 3.What could have been improved in the structure or elements of the lesson plans? 4.Is there enough information for you to teach the lesson to your students? Explain. 5.If you notice any lesson plan elements not on your poster, please add them!

Lesson Plan Analysis—Discussion In your groups, think about the lesson plans you have been designing this past week, and compare them to the lesson plan formats you just reviewed. Questions: What important elements have you already included in your lesson plans? What important elements need to be added to your lesson plans so they are “sharable” with other teachers? Be prepared to share your thoughts in a few minutes.

Where are we now? With your lesson study team, you have already started lesson study. At this point in time, different lesson study teams are at very different places in their planning process, and that is OK! And expected! The lesson study work you have started will continue during the school year. Regardless of where your team ends up tomorrow, each team will need to meet hours during the school year to continue the lesson study process.

Where are we now? (continued) The more you get done during the institute, the more complete your final lesson plans will be. Example #1: Your team outlined a sequence of 3 lessons for your instructional case. Assume you selected the 2 nd lesson as your research lesson. Assume you finish the detailed lesson plans for it by the end of this institute. During the school year lesson study meetings: You will go ahead and design the other two lessons in your sequence through consensus, and create detailed lesson plans.

Where are we now? (continued) Example #2: Your team outlined a sequence of 3 lessons for your instructional case. Assume you selected the 2 nd lesson as your research lesson. Assume you do NOT finish the detailed lesson plans for it by the end of this institute. During the school year lesson study meetings: You will finish the detailed lesson plans for the research lesson. You will design as much of the other two lessons in your sequence that you have time to complete.

Lesson Study During the School Year In a few minutes, you are going to have time to plan and set some dates for the school year. You will also compile your contact information so your team can stay in touch. The process will begin by selecting a 2 week window when you think you will be teaching each of your research lessons. Once those are set, you can work backwards to estimate approximately when you need to hold lesson study meetings. You can mix and match the number of meetings and the length of your meetings to get to the hours.

Lesson Study During the School Year Your schedule might look something like this: Meeting 1: Planning Meeting 2: Planning Meeting 3: Planning Meeting 4: Planning Meeting 5: Planning Research Lesson 1 (Observation/Debrief) Meeting 6: to Revise Lesson Research Lesson 2 (Observation/Debrief) Meeting 7: for Final Lesson Revision 90 mins/meeting x 7 meetings = 10.5 hours Or 2 hr/meeting x 6 meetings = 12 hours

Lesson Study During the School Year You could get even more detailed: Meeting 1: Planning—Sept ____ Meeting 2: Planning—Oct 1 (Quarterly IMSS Meeting) Meeting 3: Planning—Nov ____ Meeting 4: Planning—Dec 3 (Quarterly IMSS Meeting) Meeting 5: Planning—Jan ____ Research Lesson 1 (Observation/Debrief)— Jan ____ Meeting 6: to Revise Lesson—Feb _____ Research Lesson 2 (Observation/Debrief)— Feb ___ Meeting 7: for Final Lesson Revision—Mar __

Your Two Tasks During Planning Time: 1.Academic Year Planning. Read the handout on Academic Planning. Complete the Academic Year Planning Report. Optional: Map out your meetings. 2.Select a Lesson Plan Format. Decide the important elements and structure of your final lesson plans. Then, go to work adapting your work so far to this format. Start working on student handouts and teacher notes if you have time.

Keeping Organized with Google Docs We will use Google Docs to store and share documents. Your facilitator will have full access to upload and edit files. Everyone will have access to reading and downloading the files. General team member access: Go to Google Docs. Username: Password: lessonstudy
