Rights Respecting Schools Award

What does a Rights Respecting Schools Award do? It puts the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of the schools culture and ethos. It improves well-being and develops every child’s talents and abilities to their fullest potential as Global Citizens.

What is the United Nations convention on the Rights of the child?  The Convention sets out the rights of every young person under 18 and how those rights should be met  These rights are something everyone has as a result of being born. No one has power to give them to you or take them away from you. There are no conditions attached to them.

How are these rights realized?  Adults bear the responsibility for ensuring that these rights are known about, understood and realised. (Article 42) This means that:  Everyone working with children and young people needs to be fully aware of the Convention  parents and carers are responsible for ensuring they model rights respecting behaviour in bringing up their children  schools are responsible for promoting a rights respecting environment  children learn to become rights respecting global citizens

What differences will we see at Chisenhale if it becomes a Rights Respecting School? How adults talk to children. How adults talk to children. How children talk to adults. How children talk to adults. How the children have an understanding of not only their own rights but also the rights of their friends, community and nationally and globally. How the children have an understanding of not only their own rights but also the rights of their friends, community and nationally and globally.
