Keys to Success – OGT Social Studies Strategies and Techniques Extended Response/ID’s 10 th Grade U.S. History Mr. Alati

– Read the question carefully Sample Question: Identify two factors that led to massive urbanization between (10 points)

– Define the key words in the question These are words that you must know the meaning of in order to understand what the question is asking you to do. In our question: Identify two factors that led to massive urbanization between “urbanization” is the key word

– Determine what the question is asking you to do Identify any action words In the sample question – the word “Identify" is the action word. Identify two factors that led to massive urbanization between Identify = To ascertain the origin, nature, or definitive characteristics of..

– Determine how many tasks you have to perform How many responses is the question asking for? In our sample question, the answer is two items. Identify two factors that led to massive urbanization between

– Determine which information you will use in your response (setup) Some of the factors that led to massive urbanization between were: Crop prices dropping because of competition and too many crops on the market Massive droughts that dried up good farmland Farmers had to move into cities to find work in factories

– Construct your response Tips: DO NOT REPEAT THE ENTIRE QUESTION (wastes time) DO NOT just repeat what you wrote in your notes during class (that will get you a zero). You must demonstrate that you understand what we went over in class. Use complete sentences. No bullet points on this type of test. Be sure to include all of the information that you identified in your setup. Scratch out your setup on a scrap piece of paper in order to organize your thoughts.

– Example of a proper response 10 point response: * Two factors that caused massive urbanization included bad economic conditions on farms due to low crop prices. This was caused by too many crops being on the market at the same time. That caused farmers to lose their farms. There was also a bad drought during this period. As a result, farmers and their families had to move into cities to find work in factories. (this response demonstrates a clear understanding of what urbanization was as well as at least two factors that led to it)

– Examples of incomplete responses Student #1: “They moved to find work” (2 points) (provided some information but failed to demonstrate understanding of what urbanization was, needs more) Student #2: “Crops were bad” (0 points) (provided no clear understanding of the question)
