Good practice from CZ household waste Ivo Kropáček, Friends of the Earth Czech Republic and CEE Bankwatch Network Subotica, 2 June
Situation in CZ Landfill fee: 20€/t Responsibility on municipalities Take back system for packaging, WEEE Hazardous waste separation twice/year Widely (85% municipalities) used: tax per capita (max. 20€/year) Possible to have payment per frequency
Bag system with motivation Nový Bor, Mladá Boleslav, Letohrad Separation: plastics, paper, beverage cartons, (glass, metal) Enables the control quality of separation Dwellers (have to buy) bags (0,15€/pc.) Each full bag = lower payment for waste Works in house as well as flats
Home composting Biowaste = 1/3 of MSW Municipalities rent composters to househols and request them to seperate biowaste Signature of agreement Definitely lead to decrease of MSW Brumov-Bylnice saved 18% of MSW
Community composting Special/ common community composter Enable composted to residents from house of flats Possible to lock (Special boxes for separation biowaste)
PAYT: Example Rozsochy 720 dwellers have to buy counters Counter system: pay per each counter on waste bin Waste company will empty only waste bin with counter – give back to municipality for evidence Bag system for plastic, containers for paper, glass and metal
Hustope č e nad Be č vou 1800 dwellers have to buy min. one counter for mixed and one for plast Counter á 2,6€/mixed, 0,8€/plast Counters possible to buy in shops Municipality planed motivation Results: 115 kg MW/head/year Less than 100 kg mixed waste/head
Separation of biowaste Lead to higher recycling ratio Could lead to higher production of MSW In CZ it is cheaper to compost waste than to landfill it
Staré Mesto
Easy separation: Door-to-door collection/bag system Focus to biowaste: Support home- and comunity- composting Motivation: PAYT Focus to waste prevention Shift responsibility to producers Suggested measures
