Osteopathic Philosophy of Medicine What is Osteopathic Medicine? Began in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still with a belief that corrections in the body’s structure will allow the body to heal itself more efficiently. A philosophy of medicine that looks at the whole person instead of a collection of organ systems. A holistic approach that integrates the patient into the healthcare process as a partner. Considers the impact that lifestyle and community have on the health of an individual. The body is a unit, and the person represents a combination of body, mind and spirit. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

What is the difference? Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Not the same as Chiropractic or Massage Therapy What is OMM used to treat? Can be used to treat any part of the body such as headaches to lower back pain to leg swelling Benefits of DO Knowledge of manipulation that is not present in conventional medicine Drawbacks of DO No real drawbacks because it is an extra tool for a DO to use. In fact, you know more than an allopathic doctor - an extra tool in your tool belt.

Keep in Mind… Be relaxed The interviewers truly do want to get to know you. Have several things to reference for questions for when you draw a blank Ex: meaningful leadership, service, personal experiences, etc. Some interviewers have your entire application and others have only your essays

**Why did you choose to apply to a DO school? What does being a DO mean to you? Why do you think I am a DO and a surgeon? Show that you have done your research and you aren’t just applying because it was free on TMDSAS Show that you truly understand what osteopathic medicine is and how it can be used to treat different ailments Consider shadowing a DO to learn more about what they do Consider different applications for the DO philosophy and OMM in different medical specialties

**Why do you want to be a doctor? If you have DO-specific reasons, then bring those up! They may have your personal statement, but they want to know that the person on paper is the person you are in real life. Be open, honest, and share your experiences. Stay genuine DO NOT LIE! They are experienced interviewers and will be able to tell. Don’t say: “to help people” or “I love science” or “doctors make a lot of money” – go deeper and really figure out why. This could be a learning experience for you and allow you to rediscover your passion. Show that you have thought about your future Why that field? Specific experiences, people you know, etc How do your skills fit with that field?

What do you know about ObamaCare? What would you change about healthcare? You could Speak from personal experience as a patient (if you have it) Speak from experiences shadowing/working in healthcare Simply research it and talk from that point of view Look on youtube for videos, find articles Find common pro/con opinions about ObamaCare Show that you have really thought about your future role in healthcare

**How do we know that you can handle the medical school curriculum? Give examples Talk about characteristics that you have and give stories to back them up Show things that you have done in undergrad and how you would apply/change those in medical school

*Why should we choose you? Use this as a last chance to show them how you would be a perfect fit for their school Look for specific examples that show your passion and show what you would bring that is unique to the medical school class. Choose topics that you haven’t discussed yet Examples: An organization or event that you started A service event you have continuously attended A time when you helped someone Maintaining good grades while working, etc.

** Ethical Situations (1) You have a rich old man and a poor young man who both come in with the same illness and they will die without this medicine that your have. There is only enough medicine for one of them. Who do you save? (2) A mother refuses to vaccinate her child. What do you tell them? (3) You have a convulsing patient, what do you do first?

*What is your biggest weakness? Ask friends and family Turn your weakness into a strength by showing what you have learned about yourself when trying to correct it
