Incorporating Post-Secondary Options during Academic and Career Planning Kelli Kwiatkowski & Michael Fesenmaier, School District of New Berlin

Learning Targets:  Participants will determine what to consider when identifying post-secondary options in your ACP process  Understand what options can be included in the ACP process  Learn about one school district’s messaging around the options and how to prepare

Why? Our responsibility is to prepare our students to be able to access options appropriate to their learning plan (good consumers of post-secondary education). We know that students are individuals who need different options to follow their chosen path to reach their post-secondary experiences.

Where do your students go?

19% finish in 4 years At most public universities, only 19 percent of full-time students earn a bachelor’s degree in four years, the report found. Even at state flagship universities — selective, research-intensive institutions — only 36 percent of full-time students complete their bachelor’s degree on time. (Report: completecollege.org - nonprofit)

$9,139 tuition and fees for a public 4-year university per year Costly Decision Statistics from the College Board $31,231 tuition & fees for a private university per year

We are aspiring to create life-long learners ready for a new economy Diploma is no longer sufficient enough - Conley

Changes in types of jobs Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content. Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no vehicles. Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. Tom Goodwin, TechCrunch

Academic & Career Planning “is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post secondary success, obtained through self- exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. (dpi.wi.gov/acp)

What type of degree or certificate do I need to support my post-secondary goals? Will this career choice support what I want for my financial future? Which internal and external courses can I take to continue to explore my interests? What jobs would I like to shadow and when will I do that?

Financial Future Including Post-secondary is not complete unless you add in lessons regarding financial planning and what you want the future to look like

● What do I want to get out of my post- secondary experience? ● What schools offer a related degree/major? ● What will I need to provide a competitive admissions application for the schools/majors I might be interested in? For example: What level of math must I complete? Which specific science courses are required? Do I have to take a world language? Do I have to take fine arts classes?
