Spanish governor of Puerto Rico who believed there was a fountain of youth. He set out for the island of Bimini in 1513 He thought he landed on Bimini to find the fountain of youth, but instead he discovered what is now Florida! He named the island was discovered on Easter Sunday, so he named it Pascua Florida in Spanish, which in English means flowery Easter.

Spanish Explorer who landed in Florida searching for gold. He explored many areas that are now today Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. He was the first European to see the Mississippi River. He never found gold 

First French explorer to sail down the Mississippi River to reach the Gulf of Mexico. When he reached the end of the Mississippi River, he claimed the land surrounding the river for King Louis the XIV (14 th ) of France. He named the land Louisiana after King Louis.

St. Augustine was the first permanent settlement in the United States for the Spanish colony, which is in present day Florida.

John White claimed the land with 100 settlers. He went back to England for supplies. When he came back the colony along with the 100 settlers and disappeared.

All of these people were mentioned in the Chapter as once being Presidents of our Nation. Who were they? George Washington Thomas Jefferson James Madison Andrew Jackson

What is a pioneer? A person who settled in a part of the country and prepared it for others. What is a backwoodsman? A person who lived in forests far away from town.

Adventurous Brave Smart Curious What characteristics would a pioneer have? All of the same characteristics. Why? Because he or she is moving to land where few people have lived
