Define conduction and convection

Objectives Know: How heat is transferred by radiation Understand: Which situations use radiation in everyday life Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal,

Both conduction and convection require particles. But how does heat travel through a vacuum like space? Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal, Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation

Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal,

Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation

We are going to do an experiment to see how heat (thermal energy) escapes by radiation from two beakers. One beaker is covered in black paper the other is covered in silver foil. Which do you think will radiate the most heat? Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal, Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation

Tasks Carry out the practical. Write a conclusion based on your results. Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal, Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation

Heat can move by travelling as infrared waves. These are electromagnetic waves, like light waves, but with a longer wavelength. This means that infrared waves act like light waves: They can travel through a vacuum. They travel at the same speed as light – 300,000,000 m/s. They can be reflected and absorbed. What are infrared waves? Infrared waves heat objects that absorb them and are also known as thermal radiation.

If two objects made from the same material have identical volumes, a thin, flat object will radiate heat energy faster than a fat object.

Investigating thermal emission

Emitting thermal radiation All objects emit (give out) some thermal radiation. Matt black surfaces are the best emitters of radiation. white silver matt black best emitter worst emitter Certain surfaces are better at emitting thermal radiation than others. Shiny surfaces are the worst emitters of radiation. Which type of kettle would cool down faster: a black kettle or a shiny metallic kettle?

Investigating thermal absorption

Absorbing thermal radiation Infrared waves heat objects that absorb (take in) them. best emitter worst emitter best absorber worst absorber white silver matt black Matt black surfaces are the best absorbers of radiation. Certain surfaces are better at absorbing thermal radiation than others. Good emitters are also good absorbers. Shiny surfaces are the worst emitters because they reflect most of the radiation away. Why are solar panels that are used for heating water covered in a black outer layer?

Key terms: radiation, transfer, heat, thermal, Outcomes C: Describe using scientific ideas how heat is transferred by radiation. B: Explain what heat radiation is. A: Generate an experiment to investigate radiation
