Mount Rainier’s Autobiography There are hints for the worksheet located on the last slide of this PowerPoint Presentation.

Strata are layers of rock and other sediment. Sediment can be soil, glacial deposits, volcanic ash, lava flows, sand, cinders, etc.

The oldest layers of rock are deeper and the newest layers of rock are closer to the surface (for the most part). The deeper you go, the older the rock. The K-T boundary is a layer that was deposited about 65 mya. It has very high levels of iridium (a radioactive element).

A Tibetan word that means mudflow/landslide. Lahars can be caused by earthquakes, floods and eruptions. Lahars can travel for dozens of miles.

An ash cloud from a volcanic eruption that settles over a few days or weeks and forms a rock layer. Tephra can travel hundreds of miles.

Mt. Mazama is the name given to the volcano that is now Crater Lake. Crater Lake is in central Oregon.

Question 3: IF YOU HAVE THE ANSWER OF 15O YEARS AGO (OR 1865), TAKE ANOTHER LOOK. Question 4: IF YOU SAID LIKELY, TAKE ANOTHER LOOK. Question 5: IF YOU SAID LIKELY, TAKE ANOTHER LOOK. Question 6: YOU NEED TO HAVE THE CORRECT ANSWER (YEAR) FOR #3 TO GET THIS ONE RIGHT. Question 7: WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN TO HAVE GLACIERS AND WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN TO HAVE GLACIAL DEPOSITS? Question 10: DON’T OVER THINK THIS ONE. NOT ALL CATASTROPHIC PROCESSES NEED TO BE VOLCANIC IN ORIGIN. Question 12: IF YOU SAID YES, TAKE ANOTHER LOOK.
