TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 SAFETY AND ACCESS CONTROL Where do we stand ? P. Ninin & the Access project team TS/CSE,

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Outline LHC Access Control LHC Access Safety Architecture Experiments Open Issues Planning Conclusion

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Project is made of 2 parts: * LHC Access Control System (Industrial Access equipment) * LHC Access Safety System (High reliability Interlock system) Integrated concept for Machine & Experiments

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Control System Goals: –Manage access right –Identify user –Verify authorization –Automatic or remote access control Scope –Access hardware: lock chambers, lock, grids, doors –Audio/video, –Monitoring and control, –Interfaces, –Biometrics identification (Iris recognition) –Contact-less card reader –Authorization database

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Control System Status –Tendering completed –Analysis of the first bid meeting the specification Identification, Biometric, Supervision, Lock Chambers, Locks –Will be presented at the June 2004 Finance Committee

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Safety System Goals: –Protect personnel during Beam operation nobody inside Stop LHC if a Door is open or an Emergency Stop is pushed –Allows Access operation when safety conditions are met No radiation hazards (LHC beam, RF) No electrical hazards –Distributed, highly reliable interlock system Strictly designed according to the prescription of the IEC Safety Integrity Level 3 Constraints: –Project checked by the INB (play transparency) CCF (Common Cause of Failure) CDU (Critère de Défaillance Unique) Documentation, methods, test, QA

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Safety System Status –Assurance Quality framework set on the project Delivered to the French Nuclear Authority (INB) Development plan (EDMS ) –Projects phases, deliverables, roles, safety studies –External assistance on functional safety matters Detailed specification (EDMS ) : –Safety functions:  For each operation mode (Beam, Access, Test,…)  What, why, where (not yet how)  Safety integrity level associated –System requirements  Maintenance, configuration, supervision, archive, alarm Interfaces definition –Beam Dump, RF, Beam Interlock, Power converters

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Exemple of a LASS Safety Function

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Next Stage Specification validation –AB-OP feedback –Actual specification and interfaces will be frozen in a baseline Architecture design –Design the architecture according to the Safety Integrity Level defined for each safety function –Revision of cost estimates –Preparation of the installation and cabling

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access SafetyLHC Access Control

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Experiments Agree to the Access concept Limited specific requirements Emphasis on: –24h/365d operation –VIP access –Counting –DB update performance –Surface, service, tunnel access Few interlocks LHC Experiments requirements collected and documented by the LAAWG* (chaired by D. Swoboda) *LHC Access Area Working Group ATLAS –Possibility to interlock the access system with the calorimeter source CMS/TOTEM –No interlocks needed –Access between US and UX to be installed in autumn LHCb –LHC Access Control System was presented to the January meeting of the LHC-b Technical Board and was accepted without particular comments ALICE –Access inside the L3 magnet (‘confined space’)

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Open issues Emergency stop –LHC Access Safety or Machine Protection System? Vacuum –Interlocked ? Integration of new identifier and personal dosimeter Integration in the CERN environment: –Safety training, Human Resource Database Revision of the ‘sectorisation’ (EDMS , S. Di Luca) –Point 8, long process More points to control than foreseen Integration issue

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Sectorisation site 8 - S. Di Luca, EDMS 34410

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 EIS: Point d'acces en UX85

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Remarks Reliability –No false triggering, that could stop the LHC Weak solicitation Final definition of the access sector NOW ! –To prepare the cabling. –To prepare the monitoring of every safety element. ‘Miss or Mister Access’ needed –(We got almost a ‘Mister Alarm’)

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Planning

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 LHC Access Systems Phases Q2Q3Q Q1Q2Q3Q Q1Q2Q3Q Q1Q2Q3Q Q1Q2Q3Q Q1 Design & Pilot Specification Contract Installation & Testing Maintenance  Design  Validation  Factory Acceptance Test  ‘LHC 0’ Installation (B104)  CERN Acceptance test  Install Pilot access equipment Sectors 8-1,7-8, CCC computing infrastructure  Site acceptance  Install access equipment for remaining sectors  Integrate sector in computing infrastructure  Local safety chain validation  Sector acceptance test  Global safety chain validation  Overall site acceptance test

P.Ninin, TS/CSE TS Workshop, Archamps 4 May 2004 Conclusion Access control –Contract -> June FC (as foreseen) Access Safety –Detailed specification is progressing well –First documentation delivered to the INB –Rigorous follow-up of the Functional Safety standards –Architecture will be given to the INB in September 04 Open issues –Numerous but nothing blocking for the moment –Integration of the Access system in the CERN/LHC environment –Revision of the LHC access sectors Experiments –Requirements gathered
