North American Colonies Colonies in North America were established for RELIGIOUS and ECONOMIC reasons.

Roanoke Island (The Lost Colony)- 1585 Established as an ECONOMIC venture

Jamestown- 1607 First PERMANENT English Settlement in North America (1607) An economic venture by the VIRGINIA Company of London.

Georgia- 1733 Settled by people who had been in debtor’s PRISONS in England. Hoped to experience ECONOMIC freedom and a new life in the New World
