Adjectives Activity Take out a piece of paper and remove everything else from your desk. You will have 30 seconds to write down as many adjectives to describe the picture on the following slide. When the alarm rings, put down your pen/pencil. No words will be counted after the 30 seconds have past. When you are ready, put your head down on the desk. I will tell you to look at the screen.

Midterm Review Take your midterm test. You need to take out a piece of paper. Divide it into three columns. It should look like this: #1 Answer: A Rationale Correct Answer #2 B #3 C

Fill out your answer sheet, including the rationale, for questions :16-22, and 37 – 42 You must fill out the rationale, how you came to this answer. You will have 10 minutes.

Now get into your 4 person groups and discuss how/why you came up with your answers. Come to a group decision and change your answer on your sheet if needed. When you have finished the assignment, take out your R&J books and continue your reading.

Literary terms to look for... 1.) Puns- a humorous play on words Romeo – “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes / With nimble soles; I have a soul of lead…” (Act I Sc. 4) 2.) Allusions- a reference to a well-known work of art, music, literature, or history “At lovers’ perjuries, they say Jove laughs.” (Act II, Sc. 2 Jove is another name for Jupiter, the Roman King of the Gods.

Juliet – “Beautiful tyrant! fiend angelical!” (Act III Sc.2) 3.) Metaphor- A direct comparison between two unalike things. Romeo- “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?/ It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” (Act II scene 2) 4.) Oxymorons- Two juxtaposed words have opposing/ very diverse meanings Juliet – “Beautiful tyrant! fiend angelical!” (Act III Sc.2) 5.) Personification- Occurs when an inanimate object or concept is given the qualities of a person or animal. Juliet— “For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night / Whiter than new snow on a raven’s back. / Come, gentle night, come, loving, black-brow’d night” (Act III Sc. 2)

Juliet – “O serpent heart, hid with a flowering face!” (Act III Sc. 2) 6.) Paradox- a statement that seems to contradict itself with two elements that are incompatible Juliet – “O serpent heart, hid with a flowering face!” (Act III Sc. 2) 7.) Foreshadowing- a reference to something that will happen later in the story. Juliet – “Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” (Act III Sc. 2)

Setting The story is set in the late 1500’s mostly in the town of Verona, Italy. However, there are a few acts set in Mantua, Italy a smaller town just a few miles away.

Interesting… The Italian city of Verona, where Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day. “Star-crossed lovers” refers to two people who are in love but have conflicting astrological signs. In Shakespeare’s times, people believed the course of their lives was determined by the exact second they were born.

What is social justice?  Social justice is about assuring the protection of equal access to liberties, rights, and opportunities, as well as taking care of the least advantaged members of society. Thus, whether something is just or unjust depends on whether it promotes or hinders equality of access to civil liberties, human rights, opportunities for healthy and fulfilling lives, as well as whether it allocates a fair share of benefits to the least advantaged members of society.  Although justice in our increasing globalized society has advanced greatly in the modern era, there are still many marginalized people both in and outside of the United States who struggle for fair treatment on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are talented, dedicated individuals who are using their talents and passions to help alleviate social injustices throughout the world. Whether it’s through providing women with access to education in Africa, creating biotechnology for the disabled, or helping immigrants learn how to adjust to life in a new country, people are finding innovative ways to help those in need.

For this assigned research paper, you will choose a social justice issue from the list provided that appeals to your interests and experience. You will then craft a well-worded thesis in which you explain background information on the social justice issue, as well as the person, group of people, or organization that is currently doing something to address this injustice. Your thesis should be written in parallel structure and address both components of the paper: the background of the issue and those who are working to solve this important social justice issue.
