When a person is injured or under great stress, the body’s system for circulating blood may fail to provide enough blood to all parts of the body.

What is shock?

A combination of mouth-to- mouth rescue breathing (or other artificial ventilation techniques) and chest compressions.

What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)?

When the upper airway becomes blocked and the victim can’t breathe. This condition can cause unconsciousness and death.

What is choking?

Persistent pain or heavy pressure in the center of the chest. Pain may extend to the jaw, neck, left shoulder, and left arm. The person may feel a burning in the chest similar to a feeling of indigestion. There may be sweating, nausea, vomiting, unnatural paleness, shortness of breath, or difficulty in breathing.

What are the symptoms of a heart attack?

Victim suddenly becomes ill, is nauseous or vomiting, or complains of a sudden burning or pain in the throat. Victim may be found unconscious, confused or disoriented. Signs may also include unusual breath or body odors, or odors on the victim’s clothing or at the scene. There may also be burns around the mouth.

What are the symptoms of poisoning or overdosing?

Tied to the arms, legs, or trunk when a sprain, dislocation, or fracture is suspected, to keep the injured part from moving.

What is a splint?

Twisting, wrenching, or lifting movements that tear or stretch tissues around a joint. Sudden pain and swelling of a joint results.

What is a sprain?

Used to support an injured hand or arm.

What is a sling?

1.Point tenderness 2.Swelling or bluish color at the injury site 3.Unusual or abnormal shape, position, or movement of the bone or joint 4.Grating sound or feeling 5.Inability to move the injured limb

What are the symptoms of a closed (simple) fracture?

Ankle pull, blanket pull, one- person lift, shoulder pull, fire- fighter carry, and pack-strap carry.

What are types of single rescuer carries?

Rough, jagged cuts made by tearing and breaking skin and flesh

What are lacerations?

This type of wound can be caused by a nail, wood splinter, fishhook, and similar objects.

What is a puncture wound?

A strip of material used to hold a dressing or splint in place. It helps to immobilize, support, and protect the injury.

What is a bandage?

Exposure to acids (e.g., model glue, drain cleaners, toilet bowel cleaners) and bases (e.g., chlorine bleach, ammonia, oven cleaners)

What causes chemical burns?

Helps control bleeding, absorb blood and wound secretions, prevent additional contamination, and ease pain.

What are the functions of a dressing?

The two types of poisonous snakes of North America

What are the pit viper and coral snake?

A fatal illness that can be carried by all warm-blooded animals, but especially by dogs, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and bats.

What is rabies?

Puncture marks, pain (perhaps extreme), swelling (possibly severe), skin discoloration, nausea and vomiting, shallow breathing, blurred vision, and shock

What are signs of a pit viper bite?

The bite is not immediately painful. Within 2 to 8 hours; however, there may be mild to severe pain with redness at the bite site. The area becomes swollen and tender, and a small blister usually forms. An open sore or ulcer is likely to develop. In some cases, victims suffer fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, jont pain, and a faint rash.

What are the symptoms of a Brown Recluse Spider bite?

1.If on the arm or leg, use a constricting band between the heart and bite 2.Put ice water or ice on the wound 3.Keep the area lower than the rest of the body 4.Make sure victim continues to breathe 5.Get medical care quickly

How do you give first aid to a victim suffering a severe allergic reaction to a bite or sting?

When a person’s body core temperature drops so low that it is no longer possible to keep warm

What is hypothermia?

As flesh freezes it may become painful and then numb. If the freezing continues, the area will stiffen and become grayish or whitish in color. Blisters may appear.

What are the symptoms of frostbite?

Painful muscle spasms caused by loss of salt from the body, brought on by sweating and heat stress.

What are heat cramps?

Dark-colored urine, thirst, dry lips, and a dry mouth. Other signs can include fatigue, headache, body aches, and confusion.

What are the symptoms of dehydration?

1.Move to a cool, shaded spot 2.Place victim faceup with head and shoulders raised 3.Cool body temperature as quickly as you can 4.If able to drink, give the victim all the water he/she wants 5.Treat for shock and obtain medical help immediately

How do you treat for heatstroke (sunstroke)?
