Stages of Adult Development What growing up looks like

What Makes An Adult? For the following, write down ‘yes’ or ‘no’ if that event is what makes you an adult: 1. Finished school 2. Got a full-time job 3. You don’t depend on anyone else (your parents) for money 4. You support your own family 5. Get married 6. Have children 7. You don’t live with your parents anymore Milestones in the Transition to Adulthood

Three Stages of Adulthood “Transitional Adulthood” Age 18–29 Challenge of juggling different roles Main focus: get a job The Middle Years Age 30–65 Family and employment achieved May be supporting transitional adult children or elderly or sick parents Old Age Older than 65 ‘Appraisal’ of their own lives Feel ‘time closing in’

Challenges of Adulthood “Transitional Adulthood” Biggest challenge is finding a mate Intimacy vs. Isolation (same dilemma as childhood) The Middle Years Divorce Job Loss Parents Single parent, especially difficult Old Age Transition to Old Age involves ‘reorientation’ Focus shifts from how far you have come to how much time may be left Mind over body

Three Stages of Adulthood Do you think these stages were the same in the Middle Ages? Explain. What impact would an economic downturn have on these stages? Why?
