Trouble in the Cereal Aisle California State University San Marcos Professor Morrissette, Biol 323 Elizabeth Smith Lauren Tisdale

Our Trip to the Market Ralph’s Cereal Aisle Almost the entire aisle was filled with different types of cereals Decided to compare 17 different cereals that we thought would be: high in fiber low in sugar good taste as well Took pictures of the nutritional facts and compiled them into a spreadsheet

Recommended Cereals Fiber One Honey Clusters Most fiber, 51% RDA! Only 6 grams of sugar 25% of the RDA of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid and iron Why is fiber so good for you? Helps with digestion Maintenance of blood sugar levels Reduces risk of heart disease Kashi Autumn Wheat Only three ingredients (therefore not as many vitamins) 24% of the RDA of fiber Kashi Go Lean Original 40% of the RDA of fiber, 2 nd highest of our selection of cereals Highest amount of potassium Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted 100% of the RDA of vitamins B6, B12, E and folic acid 20% of the RDA of fiber

Non Recommended Cereals Raisin Bran Talk about a sugar high! 19 grams of sugar. That is more than Honey Comb and Lucky Charms Not a great source of fiber like it claims to be…7grams Smart Start It’s not so smart! 14 grams of sugar Only 3 grams of fiber, that’s 12% of the RDA The picture on the box and claim to a healthy heart is very misleading so don’t be fooled. Kashi: Go Lean Honey Almond Flax Just because it has a great reputation does not mean it’s always good for you. 12 grams of sugar! Double the amount found in other Kashi cereals It has 8 grams of fiber
