Vocabulary Energy is the ability to cause changes in matter and move it.Energy is the ability to cause changes in matter and move it. The energy of motion, or energy is use, is kinetic energy. The energy of motion, or energy is use, is kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy an object has because of where it is or because of its condition.Potential energy is the energy an object has because of where it is or because of its condition. When light bounces of matter it is called reflection. When light bounces of matter it is called reflection. Bending of light rays is called refraction.Bending of light rays is called refraction. A lens is a piece of clear material that bends, or refracts, light rays passing through it.A lens is a piece of clear material that bends, or refracts, light rays passing through it. Light energy travels in straight lines and moves through air, empty space, and certain other materials, such as water and glass.Light energy travels in straight lines and moves through air, empty space, and certain other materials, such as water and glass. Objects that transmit light allow the light to pass through them.Objects that transmit light allow the light to pass through them. Some light objects absorb light turning it into the color we see and thermal energy. Some light objects absorb light turning it into the color we see and thermal energy.

Energy’s Relationship with Matter Energy is the ability to cause changes in matter.Energy is the ability to cause changes in matter. Energy causes matter to move.Energy causes matter to move. There are two basic kinds of energy:There are two basic kinds of energy: –Kinetic energy –Potential energy

Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is the energy of motion or energy in use.Kinetic energy is the energy of motion or energy in use. Any matter in motion is kinetic energy.Any matter in motion is kinetic energy.

Potential Energy Potential energy is the energy an object has because of where it is or because of its condition.Potential energy is the energy an object has because of where it is or because of its condition.

Law of conservation of energy. “Energy can’t be created or destroyed. Energy is transformed from one type to another.”

Kinetic vs Potential Energy

Law of Conservation of Energy Kinetic Energy Potential Energy

Forms of Energy Mechanical energy is kinetic energy that moving objects have.Mechanical energy is kinetic energy that moving objects have.

Forms of Energy Thermal energy is the product of particles/molecules in matter produces heat energy.Thermal energy is the product of particles/molecules in matter produces heat energy.

Forms of Energy Electrical energy is caused by the movement of electrons found in atoms.Electrical energy is caused by the movement of electrons found in atoms.

Forms of Energy Matter is made up of particles or molecules. These molecules move (or vibrate) constantly. A rise in the temperature of matter makes the particles vibrate faster. Thermal energy is what we call energy that comes from the temperature of matter. The hotter the substance, the more its molecules vibrate, and the therefore the higher its thermal energy.

Forms of Energy Light energy is energy that moves in waves and allows us to see things around us.Light energy is energy that moves in waves and allows us to see things around us.

Forms of Energy Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal (compression/rarefaction) waves. Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate — the energy is transferred through the substance in a wave. Typically, the energy in sound is far less than other forms of energy.

Chemical Energy Chemical Energy is energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds (atoms and molecules). It is released in a chemical reaction, often producing heat as a by product (exothermic reaction). Batteries, biomass, petroleum, natural gas, and coal are examples of stored chemical energy. Usually, once chemical energy is released from a substance, that substance is transformed into an entirely new substance
