Types of Drugs Hallucinogen- a drug which effects the user’s thoughts, perceptions, consciousness, and emotions; these drugs will often cause the user to also have a false reality where they see, hear, and feel things that are not really there Stimulant- a drug which speeds up the systems in the body (heart rate, breathing, etc); “uppers”; heightens senses Depressant- a drug which causes the systems in the body to slow down; “downers”; depresses senses

Specific Drugs We will Cover Marijuana- comes from the cannabis plant; THC is the drug in it; most commonly it is smoked; acts as a stimulant, depressant and sometimes hallucinogen; illegal Weight loss pills- drugs that are specifically designed to cause weight loss; oftentimes have extremely harmful side effects Performance enhancing drugs- drugs designed specifically for athletes to improve their performance/strength/etc Prescription meds – drugs designed specifically for medical use to help with sicknesses; strong enough that they need to be prescribed by a doctor OTC drugs- drugs designed specifically for medical uses, especially cases that are not as serious; available for the general public for purchase
