Presentation transcript:

 Giver of life, Guide, Spirit of Truth. Jesus called the Holy Spirit “the Advocate ”, translated from the Greek word “ Paraclete ”. Some bibles translate it to “ Helper ” or “ Comforter ”.  Advocate means “someone who stands by your side”  The Holy Spirit takes our side, helps us defend our belief in Jesus, supports us in living out our faith in word and deed.

 Water –  signifies the Holy Spirit’s action in Baptism. (1 Cor 12:13) “For in one Spirit we are all baptized into one body”. And in John 7:37-39, Jesus directly associates the Spirit with the living water that satisfies spiritual thirst.

 Fire –  signifies the vibrant and transforming energy of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire upon the Apostles at Pentecost, and they were transformed into courageous witnesses for Christ.

 A cloud and light –  In the Old Testament, God often appeared as a fire or light within a dense cloud (Ex 40:38, Ezekiel 1:4). This symbolizes that the Holy Spirit reveals yet also keeps hidden the glory of God. In the New Testament, clouds play a role in Jesus’ baptism, Transfiguration and Ascension.

 A dove –  In all four Gospels, at Jesus’ baptism the Spirit descends on him in the form of a dove. This is why in Christian art, a dove often symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

 Anointing of Oil –  As part of our sacramental rites, to be anointed with oil (Chrism) symbolizes that the power of the Holy Spirit is being poured out on the person. The word Christ means “the one anointed by God’s Spirit.” Jesus pours out his Spirit on all those who are baptized and confirmed, (as well as on those receiving the Sacrament of Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick)

 Laying on of hands –  Jesus healed the sick and blessed children by laying his hands on them (Mark 10:16). People received the Holy Spirit when the Apostles laid hands on them (Acts 8:17)

 Who is the Holy Spirit?  The 3 rd person of the blessed Trinity – proceeds from the Father and the Son….  The Holy Spirit is part of everything that God is and does and always has been and always will be.  Hebrew word for wind is ruah = “breath” or “spirit”

At Creation – In the beginning when God created the heavens and earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. (Gen 1:1-2)

 Most dramatic manifestation of the Holy Spirit – recorded at beginning of the Acts of Apostles. (READ Acts 2:1-8)  Pentacost celebrated 50 days after Easter. Birthday of the Catholic Church.  Holy Spirit gave the apostles courage to preach the message of Jesus and to baptize those who believed.

 The Spirit prepares men and goes out to them with his grace, in order to draw them to Christ.  The Spirit manifests the risen Lord to them, recalls his word to them and opens their minds to the understanding of his Death and Resurrection.

 The Spirit makes present the mystery of Christ, supremely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God, that they may "bear much fruit.“  CCC 737

 Build, Animate, and Sanctify the Catholic Church

 Gifts are freely given while the Fruits are the result in the process.  The Gifts are what the Spirit gives us and the Fruits are the things that we return to the Spirit.  7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit – (the number 7 represents fullness or completion). Read Isaiah 11:2-3

 The spiritual gift is the spiritual ability given to the believer at conversion to enable him to serve God  E.g. St. Paul was given by God the gift to preach His word during his conversion

 Charity  Joy  Peace  Patience  Kindness  Goodness

 Generosity  Gentleness  Faithfullness  Modesty  Self-control  Chastity
