“Abandon all hope ye who enter here”

Dante enters the eighth circle, which is where evil counselors are punished All of the evil counselors punishment is being trapped in pillars of flame They’re sins were that they abused the gifts that God gave them and they used their talents for evil Virgil shows Dante Odysseus and Diomede. They are in two tongues of flame, but separated so they cannot be together Virgil allows Dante to speak to Odysseus

Odysseus tells the story of how he got in Hell He says that he decided to sail to the Mountain of Purgatory after all of his family dies. He takes all of his shipmates from The Odyssey, even though his shipmates are all supposed to be dead. They sail to past Hercules Pillars, which is supposed to be the edge of the world. As soon as they glimpse Mount Purgatory, God sends down a huge storm to sink their ship because no living man was meant to see heaven without dying. Odysseus sins were: 1.) He misled his companions by telling them he could reach Purgatory without dying 2.)He took Achilles away from Deimeda, both of who died. 3.)He devised the Trojan Horse

Why are Odysseus and Diomede separated in the pillars of fire? Because you can only be joined by virute, and both Odysseus and Diomede were not virtuous so they couldn’t be joined together. What were Odysseus’ sins? Misleading his companions, taking achilles away, and devising the Trojan Horse Why are they hidden in flames? Because they hid their gifts from God and so they should be hidden by the flames of the devil Why do you think these sins are so far down in the 8 th circle of hell? Because counselors are corrupting people and turning them away from God, which is like taking their chance away from being able to go to Heaven. Why would Dante have reason to be afraid of the 8 th circle? Because he could be a false counselor by writing the whole inferno and he could eventually end up in this 8 th circle
