Camera Work To comment on camera work, you need to: 1.Describe the shot, using the right terms, 2.Explain how it tells a story.

Camera Framing When you are looking at a shot, consider:  What you see in the shot;  How far the camera is from the subject;  The angle the shot is taken at.

Main Camera Shots  Close up  Extreme close up  Two shot  Medium shot

Main Camera Shots  Long Shot  Point of View Shot (comes after a shot of someone looking at something) Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone 1960)

Main Camera Shots  High angle shot  Aerial shot  Low angle shot Ghandi (Attenburgh 1982) A Fistful of Dollars (Leone 1964)

Camera shot conventions  Close-ups show emotion, or focus attention on a certain action or object.  Long shots establish setting. Daisy Doodad’s Dial (1914)

Camera Movement  Pan - camera moves from side to side from a fixed axis.  Tilt - camera moves up and down from a fixed axis  Crane - camera mounted on a crane, moves at a distance above ground level  Track - camera follows action, moving along tracks laid for the purpose, often pulling back from the scene.

Camera Movement cont.  Hand held camera - results in shaky footage.  Steadicam - camera strapped to camera operator, allowing movement through 360˚
