Presentation transcript:

Deep Space is not the same thing as Deep Focus

Narrow Depth of Field

Deep Space w/o Deep Focus

DEEP SPACE = a M-E-S choice

Toland/Welles combine Deep Space and Depth of field to create DEEP FOCUS

DEEP FOCUS depends upon M-E-S Lighting -- enough, also, expressive and directive Staging -- movement within the frame, narrative develops w/in one shot Scenic elements, elaborate sets Emphasize thresholds and planes of space Ceilings

DEEP FOCUS depends upon CINEMATOGRAPHIC EFFECTS Camera angle and position in relation to scene Camera movement (in some shots) Lens technology -- wider angle lens Overall camera style: craning tracking of other shots triggers us to look into space in other shots Preconditions our gaze to move into depth. Penetrating camera moment through the film, provides context for the deep focus shots. Matte shots -- composite imaging
