April 1942 Ford joined the U.S Naval Reserve during WWII He became a physical fitness instructor at the pre- flight school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina In 1943 he started service in light aircraft carrier USS MONTEREY His first assignments were athletic director and gunnery division officer After this he then became an assistant navigator, with the MONTEREY He had a near death experience when he was almost thrown off of board during a typhoon in the Philippine Sea in December 1944 Ford was discharged in February 1946
