Swimming the Stream Media that Matters in IL Instruction

Swimming the Stream SWOSU is a doctoral-granting, four- year institution, with 5500 students. Approximately 1000 first-year students. English Comp II is a required course for first-year students. This is our main opportunity to provide formal instruction: 2-6 classes.

Islands in the Stream DID YOU KNOW…..

Educational Goals:21st Century 1. Teach Students to be self-directed & understand how to organize more & more of their own learning. 2. Teach our Students the importance of global communication. 3. Teach our Students to deal with massive amounts of information.

Islands in the Stream Have we changed our teaching methods to reflect new technology?

Islands in the Stream New data shows that more than 70 percent of Internet users streamed video online in March this year. Television, movies, music and more — it’s all there in that box, awaiting full integration.

Islands in the Stream Stream has become a virtual deluge. Will libraries become islands in the stream? How do we incorporate streaming into instruction?

Islands in the Stream More media, more pitfalls: Information skills are one thing, container skills another…podcasts, MP3s, eBooks… Our patrons/students look to us to know about the new formats coming down the pipe. We can stick our heads in the sand and ignore this media….

Swimming the Stream Or we can use it to motivate students!

Swimming the Stream The goal in IL instruction is to create content that is Relevant & Engaging. However, there is always the case of too much of a good thing….. For example:

“The future is here. It's just not evenly distributed yet.” What role does streaming hold for Libraries? What role does VR hold for Library Instruction? What role as Instructors lies ahead? Tour Guide? Savant? Friendly Neighborhood Librarian.
