Changes in the Earth’s Crust. What is stress? You get stressed when you have too much work or have a test to study for You can get stress in certain parts.
3 Types of Stress 1. Tension: stress that pulls rock apart Rock gets thinner in the middle 2. Compression: stress that pushes rock together 3. Shearing:

Presentation transcript:

Stress-the amount of force per unit area on a given material Deformation-the process by which the shape of a rock changes because of stress Compression-when two tectonic plates collide and squeeze together Tension-stress that occurs when two forces act to stretch an object

The bending of rock layers because of stress in the Earth’s crust Types of folding Anticlines-upward arching fold Syncline-downward, trough-like fold Monocline-rock layers are folded so that both ends of the fold are horizontal

The surface along which rocks break and slide past each other Normal faults-when rocks are pulled apart because of tension Reverse faults-when rocks are pushed together by compression Strike-slip-form when opposing forces cause rock to break and move horizontally
