‘ EMANCIPATION DAY ’ GROUP 1 Bianca Chloe Deegii Roumayne Sherry

 August Monday (first Monday in August) is also known as Emancipation Day in some Caribbean territories including sister islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis.  It is a public holiday in commemoration of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 which ended slavery and was passed by the British Parliament on August 1,  Presently, Emancipation Day observance occupies two days—August Monday and the following Tuesday which are celebrated during many cultural festival or carnivals throughout.

 Residents on Saint Kitts & Nevis usually celebrate with picnics, parties, family gatherings on the beach or in the parks.  Last year (2013) an Emancipation Festival at Brimstone Hill was scheduled for the Sunday before August. It is the first of its kind and promises to be a celebration of "our rise out of bondage" under the theme "True Liberation Through Ownership of Our Heritage.” 

 On the island of Nevis, the holiday falls within their annual Culturama, a weeklong type of celebration.  I will show you a few pictures so you can see some of what takes place on those two days……

 Then after all that partying and street dancing the annual Miss Caribbean Culture is held with ladies from all over the Caribbean competing for the crown..

 But …..only one can be crowned queen.
