Ecological Succession
Ecological Succession Notes Ecosystems are constantly changing in response to natural and human disturbances. As an ecosystem changes, older inhabitants.
The gradual, sequential regrowth of a community of species in an area is called ecological succession. You can see early stages of succesion in vacant.

Succession A community change in which new population of organisms replace existing ones

What causes succession? Fires Mining Agriculture Logging Catastrophic events (floods, earthquakes, volcanic activity etc.) The first 4 bullets above are examples of Secondary succession, the 5 th, primary succession

Secondary succession Has established soils. This is not the case with primary succession.

Sketch Primary Succession

Each stage along the way is called a seral stage. There are 5 seral stages shown.

The first group of organisms to occupy the area is : Pioneer Community

Examples of these organisms: Lichens Algae Moss

Climax community Use this word bank to complete the bottom of your hand out. Well-adapted Stable Slows down competing
