Soil-Climate Change Relationship and TEMA’s work on enhancing soil’s carbon holding capacity Cem İskender AYDIN TEMA Foundation Climate policy officer October 2015

Soil and Climate: In a complicated relationship

Long story short If you want to protect the climate, you have to protect the soil; if you want to protect the soil, you have to protect the climate

CLIMATESOIL Fossil Fuels, Transportation etc Land Use, Deforestation etc. Actions to prevent the climate change Actions to preserve the soil Climate Change Land Degradation Human Induced Causes of Climate Change and Desertification

A holistic approach ECONOMY ENVSOC Old, economy oriented approach ECONOMY ENVIRONMENT SOCIAL Sustainable development approach ENVIRONMENT SOCIETY ECONOMY

To prevent the climate changeTo protect the carbon in the soil Use public transportations, bike, walk! Fly less! Keep soil planted! Protect the land! Use energy efficient electrical appliances! Minimize tillage! Use renewable energy!Use cover crops! Prefer locally grown food! Avoid monoculture, enhance diversity, and implement crop rotation Reduce waste! Do not buy packaged food! Re-use, re-cycle! READ PACKAGES! No chemicals! Stop using fossil! Support climate advocacy groups to stop governments and companies using fossil fuels to produce electricity Protect the pastures and grazelands! Get informed about the causes and effects of climate change, and act! Conserve the forests

What does TEMA do? To raise public awareness on environmental problems, specifically: Biodiversity Loss Habitat Destruction Deforestation Climate Change Soil erosionDesertification

Turkey’s Environmental Concerns Coal HPP and Dams Nuclear Land Use Policies Plans Use of Agricultural Lands for Other Purposes Big Projects Environmental Legislation Changes in Laws and Directives New Regulations Energy
