P ATTERNS OF D EVELOPMENT

1. D EVELOPMENT IS SIMILAR FOR EVERYONE Children all over the world go through the same stages of development in about the same order. Babies lift their head before they roll over. Stand before they can walk

2. D EVELOPMENT BUILDS ON EARLIER LEARNING. The skills a child learns at 2 builds directly on what they learned at age 1. Development follows an orderly step- by-step pattern Walk before running Speaks with simple words before speaking in sentences.

3. D EVELOPMENT PROCEEDS AT AN INDIVIDUAL RATE : Style and Rate of growth differs from one child to another Some children walk at 10 months others at months

4. D EVELOPMENT IS I NTERRELATED All areas of development continually interact (PIES) Walk: back and leg muscles must develop to support. Emotionally- 1 st steps are a risk: explorer. Socially- more independent.

5. D EVELOPMENT IS CONTINUOUS THROUGHOUT LIFE : It does not stop at a certain age. Sometimes slow, sometimes fast. We continue to develop in many ways throughout our lives. Independence Youth- learn to feed and dress yourself Teens- choosing friends, making decision Young adult- career choice, living on own Retirement- vacationing, funds, what to do with no work Elderly- fight to stay in home, stay independent
