Early years Important periods of life Famous pieces of music Interesting fact Used material Questions

EEdvard Hagerup Grieg (June 15, 1843 – September 4, 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist who composed in the Romantic period. He is best known for his Piano Concerto in A minor, for his incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (which includes Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King), and for his collection of piano miniatures Lyric Pieces.

GGrieg was born in Bergen, Norway on 15 June 1843.His mother, Gesine B. Hagerup, became his first piano teacher, who taught him to play from the age of 6. He studied in several schools including Tank's School, and often brought in examples of his music to class. GGrieg enrolled in the conservatory, concentrating on the piano, and enjoyed the numerous concerts and recitals given in Leipzig. He disliked the discipline of the conservatory course of study, yet he still achieved very good grades in most areas

 In 1971 he organized a community of musicians to increase the activity of cultural life in the town. He wrote a concerto for the pianoforte, the Second Sonata for the violin and the pianoforte, the first copybook of Lyric Plays.  During these years Edward Grieg wrote a lot of songs on texts of Andersen, Ibsen.  In the beginning of the 70s Grieg dreamed about composing an opera. Musical dramas and the theatre were the greatest wish to him.  A few years ago a composer got a proposal to write a piece of music for the drama “Peer Gynt”. Communication with one of the most talented writer of Norway gave a big interest to Grieg

 The performance of “Peer Gynt” in Christiania on 24 th February 1876 was a success. Grieg’s music became popular in Europe. A new period of composition began! He finished his work as a conductor and started writing songs. The most famous are “In the forest”, “Spring”, “The sea shines in bright sky”, “Good morning” and others.  In 1888 Grieg met Tchaikovsky in Leipzig. It was a great meeting!

 The last period of life was full of pianoforte music and songs. From 1891 till 1901 Grieg wrote six copybooks of “Lyric plays”. Some vocal cycles were perfomed during those years.  The last great orchestral work was “Symphony dances” devoted to nation and folk music.  In April of 1907 the composer made a big tour through Norway and Germany

 Morning  In the hall of the Mountain King  Good morning  The first meeting  Kobold

A call from another world
