Mr. Geerings ENG2D

 Retelling an event to friends  Movie synopsis  Describing what a book is about  Trips  How-to instructions  Many many more!

 Summarizing is taking a large selection of text and then reducing it to smaller pieces  Summarizing is finding the main idea of a text  Summarizing is also finding the supporting details of the main idea  In other words, summarizing is retelling only the important parts of the story in YOUR WORDS

 A summary is meant to be concise and short  It should be only be a paragraph long – any longer and you are likely giving too many details that are not needed

 Here is a summary of The Three Little Pigs: ◦ The Three Little Pigs is about three pigs and a wolf. The wolf blows down two of the pigs' houses because he wants to eat them. He doesn't blow down the brick house, because it is too strong. He doesn't get to eat the pigs.

 Too much detail is given, and in the end almost everything from the original story is in the summary  Parts of the story are copied word for word – not in your own words  Too few details are given  The important details are missed, while the unimportant ones are written about\  Short story elements are described – only detail the plot!

 Step 1 – Make a list of important points  Step 2 – Organize this list and cut out info that isn’t fully needed  Step 3 – Put into a paragraph!
