What is Stress? Positive Stress Stress that can help you reach your goals. Trying out for a sports team of school club. Distress (Negative) Stress that prevents you from doing what you need to do, or stress that causes discomfort. Getting into an argument with a friend or family member.

Fight-or-Flight Response As your body prepares for action, it releases adrenaline, a hormone that increases the level of sugar in the blood, giving your body extra energy.

How your body digests food Digestion: the process in which the body breaks down food. Digestive System: the group of organs that work together to break down foods into substances that your cells can use.

Digestive Organs Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Liver Pancreas Colon

Excretory System: Group of organs that work together to remove wastes. Solid Waste (Feces) Made up of solid food that the body cannot digest. Any water, vitamins, minerals, or salts left in the food are absorbed by the colon. Liquid Waste (Urine) Kidneys produce urine and control the amounts of water and salt in the body. Kidneys send urine to the bladder to be stored and removed.

Body Image The way YOU see YOUR body. Am I too thin? Do I need to lose weight? Am I too tall or short?

Does body image relate to a healthy weight?

What does determine a healthy weight? Gender Age Height Body Type Growth Patterns Genetics Healthy weight is not a set number, but a set of numbers in a range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) A method for assessing body size by taking you height and weight into account. On page 129 in the book, there is a green connect to math box in the top right corner. Using that box as a guide, calculate your own BMI. Once you have a number, look at the charts on page 130 and compare your number to the charts. What do you think could make someone’s BMI higher even though that person is still healthy? (Hint: Mr. Leh could have a high BMI but is still healthy)

We know about body image We know about healthy weight We know about BMI We now know that we should be in our healthy weight range but…

What are the benefits of a healthy weight? Can lead to positive body image Lesser chance of health problems (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.) Healthy growth Sufficient energy Ability to fight illness
