Budgeting Residents and Clinical Fellows on Sponsored Projects Things to keep in mind.

Resident Clinical Fellows Have obtained an MD degree. Most are in PGY 5 or higher and are completing a subspecialty. Clinical Fellows are considered house staff and are employed by the hospital. (This is not an academic appointment.) The “clinical training” program is a full- time (100%) experience. Are not bound by the 80 hour work week. Since the sponsored project is awarded to Stanford University, the fellow must have an academic appointment in order to give effort and receive salary support from that project. In order to direct charge salary to that sponsored project, the hospital must provide release time to offset the effort devoted to the project. Have obtained an MD degree. Most are in PGY 1-4. The “resident” appointment type is a hospital appointment. (This is not an academic appointment.) The residency program is a full-time (100%) experience. Are bound by the 80 hour work week. Since the sponsored project is awarded to Stanford University, the fellow must have an academic appointment in order to receive salary support from that project. In order to direct charge salary to that sponsored project, the hospital must provide release time to offset the effort devoted to the project.

Budgeting Residents on Sponsored Projects The residency program consumes the entirety of their 80hr work week. In order to budget a resident on a sponsored project, the hospital must provide release time so that the clinical experience + research experience does not violate the 80hr work week. The award is made to Stanford University, therefore, the resident must have an academic appointment in order to receive salary compensation from the sponsored project. The resident must sign a waiver to waive University fringe benefits given that the resident’s fringe benefits will be carried on the GME (Graduate Medical Education) roster. If the resident will not give effort or receive salary compensation from the sponsored project, neither release time nor an academic appointment are necessary.

Budgeting Clinical Fellows on Sponsored Project Clinical Fellows are house staff (100% paid by the hospital). In order to budget a clinical fellow on a sponsored project, the hospital must provide release time so that the clinical experience + research experience does not exceed 100% of the clinical fellow’s time commitment. The award is made to Stanford University, therefore, the fellow must have an academic appointment in order to give effort and receive salary compensation from the sponsored project. The Clinical Fellow must sign a waiver to waive University fringe benefits if the benefits are already paid for by the hospital on the GME (Graduate Medical Education) roster. If the clinical fellow will not give effort or receive salary compensation from the sponsored project, neither release time nor an academic appointment are necessary.
