Watch Sexual Abstinence Video  see the video link in the Smart Sexual Decisions folder on our class website. Open the video by right clicking on it and opening it with Windows Media Player. Stop watching when after the football player speaks. (about 8 min. 15 sec.)  Discuss video as a group.  FALL 2013 I USED AEA VIDEO INSTEAD OF THIS ONE….IT’S BETTER

What is it exactly?  Teen pregnancy is when any girl between years old has sexual intercourse and becomes pregnant. Usually the pregnancy is unexpected & unplanned.

How Has it Changed Over Time?  Although, some 900,000 Americans younger than 20 become pregnant every year, in the U.S., for year-olds, the pregnancy rate hit its peak in 1991, then fell off 17% by 1996  pregnancy became even less common in the early 1990s. Some 13 pregnancies occurred per 1,000 females in this age- group

Watch this video clip: Ten Teen Pregnancy Facts: 1.Three-quarters of a million teens between 15 and 19 become pregnant each year 2. Very few teens who become mothers plan on doing so. 3. Two-thirds of teen pregnancies occur among teens years old. 4. Teen mothers account for 11% of all births in the US. 5. Out of all teen pregnancies, 57% end in birth.

Ten Teenage Pregnancy Facts (continued):  6. Nearly a third of pregnant teenagers choose abortion.  7. Teens who become pregnant are less likely to attend college.  8. US teen pregnancy rates are higher than those of other developed countries.  9. Teen pregnancy rates declined between 1991 and 2005 but are on the rise again.  10. A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.

Another Fact…  ITS NOT JUST THE GIRLS THAT FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE TO HAVE SEX BECAUSE THEY ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP…ACTUALLY 25% OF BOYS FEEL LIKE THEY WERE EXPECTED TO HAVE INTERCOURSE TO FIT IN, OR TO STAY WITH THAT GIRL.

PRO/CON ABORTION  22% of teens that get abortion are due to a rape and their bodies aren’t developed enough to go through the labor  2 out of 3 teens who get an abortion their parents don’t even know that they were pregnant in the first place.

Issues to go with it..  Some think that teen pregnancy will not happen to them…but in reality they are EXTREMELY wrong.  A good thing to always keep in mind is BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

In conclusion…  Teen pregnancy can happen to you, so take the necessary precautions to keep you, and your partner able to live your last few teenage years as teen agers

Let’s Discuss the Responsibilities of Parenthood a Little More…  Cost of raising a child Calculator  raising-child-calculator raising-child-calculator  Costs of Having a Baby (Newborn -1 Yr.)

Myths About Pregnancy  1. you can’t get pregnant standing up Reality: you can get pregnant standing up or in any other position!  2. You can’t get pregnant the first time Reality: if you aren’t using birth control, you can get pregnant, virtually any time!

Myths About Pregnancy  3. My boyfriend will love me more if I get pregnant. The baby will bring us closer together. Reality: Babies can cause severe tension in relationships. Babies rarely improve a relationship.  4. Having a Child will give me an itentity. Reality: Children require an enormous amount of nurturing, emotions and resposibility. It is important to know who you are before you have a child, so that you can support your child’s emotional growth and development.

Safe Haven Law  Allows a distressed parent to surrender an unwanted infant, safely, legally and confidentially.  Provides the newborn access to needed medical care.  Enables the parents to avoid arrest or prosecution for abandonment.

Safe Haven Law  Requires no names or records  Permits babies less than 72 hours old to be surrendered to staff at any hospital emergency room or designated county site.

Safe Haven Law  Makes medical treatment available to the birth mother.  Puts the child into the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services, which places the infant in foster or pre-adoptive homes.
