Catalunya as validation supersite for GPM Catalunya and it’s current equipment. Catalunya represents the climatology of the Mediterranean area (the most affected by flooding in Europe): heavy rainy events with high variability in time and space, driven by the influence of a marked orography and the vicinity of a warm sea. The Meteorological Service of Catalunya (METEOCAT) and the Group of Applied Research on Hydrometeorology (GRAHI-UPC) are leads on the proposal of Catalunya as a validation supersite for the coming GPM mission. Introduction Catalunya has a singular base equipment: three operational radars and a dense network of telemetered rain gauges. The number of radars will be increased up to five in 2004.

Catalunya as a validation supersite for GPM The Catalan precipitation laboratory From 2004 on, the central area of Catalunya (about Km 2 ) will be seen by three different radars. This will allow to integrate this data with the rain gauge data obtaining a measure of the rainfall field of homogeneous quality. Coverage of the Catalunya radars This high covered area is of strategic interest: Over 3 million habitants (including one of the major cities in the Mediterranean) One of the most touristic areas in the world. High sensitivity to floods. Wide social interest on meteorological and precipitation measurements. In the area of Barcelona the density of the rain gauge network increases due to the network of CLABSA.

Catalunya as a validation supersite for GPM GRAHI-UPC, METEOCAT and ACA are developing an operational tool to process and integrate the data coming from the different instruments (radars and rain gauges). This tool provides in real time a 3D volume of corrected reflectivity and an optimized estimate of precipitation at ground. In parallel, a rainfall-runoff hydrological model is on development to use these data in real time for flooding warnings at a variety of basins in Catalunya. This will allow to develop the hydrological validation concept. The operational tools

Catalunya as a validation supersite for GPM Catalunya (through GRAHI-UPC) is involved in the European project VOLTAIRE. One of the objectives of this project, is to design the final validation supersite in Catalunya and to develop the hydrological validation concept, getting experience from the actual TRMM mission. VOLTAIRE partners VOLTAIRE project The design will be based on studies carried out on a simulation framework. These studies will allow a better understanding of the comparison between the satellite data and the ground based data.

Catalunya as a validation supersite for GPM Institutions leading the proposal: METEOCAT: The Meteorological Service of Catalunya ( will be in charge of the equipment and guarantee the real time operativity. GRAHI-UPC: Group of Applied Research on Hydrometeorology ( will provide the technical studies and developments to improve the processing tools and the data quality.
