Articles of Confederation

Loose alliance of 13 states Create a national government Control Military Handle Foreign alliances

Why Articles are so limited?

Fear of King or Dictator Paranoid of central government having too much power. Fought a revolution to get rid of a king.

Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation

KNOW THESE!!!!!!!! Fear of creating a national government that is too powerful Local governments know people better and easier to trust Threat to natural rights A solution to this fear is to create a weak national government. – Cannot arrest a person – Cannot collect taxes – Cannot raise troops

Who is in charge with the Articles

States had bicameral legislatures. States had strong governors with veto power States had a bill of rights.

Accomplishments of the Articles of Confederation

Establish a firm alliance with France Sign the Treaty of Paris (1783) Northwest Ordinance- Plan of government for the western territories – Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota – Territory became a state if the population reached 60,0000 – Outlawed slavery in the territories – Government sells land to pay for war debts.
