Copy the table from the next page in your science notebook.

As you go through the reading complete the table What is the pH range

KEY VOCABULARY Acid A material that acts as if it were the opposite of a base in a reaction. Acids taste sour and are usually very corrosive (destructive to metal or flesh). A strong acid has a pH below 1 on the pH scale. Base A substance that acts in an opposite way to an acid in a reaction. Bases taste bitter and are usually corrosive. Bases have a pH higher than 7. Concentrated A high amount of solute per unit of solution, undiluted. Corrosive A substance that may dissolve metals, ruin clothing, or burn skin. Strong acids and bases are corrosive. Dilute To add more solvent to a solution so that there is proportionally more solvent than solute present than before. Copy Key Vocabulary into your science notebook

Indicator A substance that can be used to demonstrate whether or not another substance is present. For example, pH paper. Neutral A solution that has a pH of 7. It is neither an acid or a base. pH A way of describing the acidic or basic strength of a solution. The pH value of a solution is a number on a scale from 0 to 14. pH scale A scale that measures the pH (how much acid or how much base) of a solution. Solute The substance that is being dissolved when a solution is formed. For example, in a salt-in-water solution, the salt is the solute. Solvent The liquid in which a substance is dissolved when a solution is formed. For example, water is the solvent in a salt in water solution.
